The Director, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, leads and directs all aspects of the Osher Institute, a highly visible self-supporting membership organization of over 600 members engaged in promoting the development of a lifelong learning community. The Director serves as a leader for liberal arts-based lifelong learning for adults in the Greater Richmond area. As a representative of the University, the Director serves a diverse constituency inclusive of alumni, leaders at the University and in the greater Richmond community, and adults age 50 and over, seeking to become involved with the University in a positive way. The Director oversees all Osher Institute operations, including grant writing, fund raising, external relations, human resources (staff and volunteers), administration, finance, program services, membership services, and marketing. The Director is a key representative and advocate for the University externally and of the SPCS across campus.

Grants and Fund Raising

Manage the terms of agreement for the endowment from the Osher Foundation

Prepare financial reports as specified by individual grants/endowments

Manage all communication with the Osher Foundation and the Osher National Resource Center, including interim reports, renewal applications, and information sharing with other Osher Institutes

Identify potential additional sources of funding in coordination with University Advancement Office; prepare proposals to secure funding from identified sources

External Relations

Cultivate ongoing successful relationships with members, educators, advisory boards, donors, volunteers, professional organizations and the public

Create and optimize strategic opportunities to represent SPCS to the University and the Greater Richmond community through lifelong learning programs and Osher members

Develop and maintain active ongoing partnerships with leaders of business and civic organizations as well as Greater Richmond community partners: Senior Connections, local retirement communities, Senior Network, service organizations of people who are 50 and over (e.g. Kiwanis, corporate retirees organizations, churches)

Develop and deliver presentations to organizations on campus and in the greater Richmond community

Promote and represent the Osher Institute at meetings, conferences, and programs, both on- and off-campus

Serve as consultant to the network of 112 Osher Institutes by providing training programs at national conferences


Direct marketing research for program development and promotion

Create advertising strategies in conjunction with SPCS Marketing Director

Design and implement marketing programs to incorporate internal and external partnerships

Manage production of course schedules, publications, invitations, newsletters

Program and Membership Services

Create liberal arts-focused program curriculum

Audit and evaluate curriculum; implement modifications as required

Manage facility scheduling and all program logistics

Establish and maintain membership benefits program with appropriate offices on campus (e.g. library, Modlin Center, One Card Office)

Manage services to current and prospective Osher members, including:

Consultation regarding individual lifelong learning goals

Orientation to member benefits, services, volunteer opportunities and the UR campus

Ongoing assistance for accessing member benefits

Encouraging and responding to feedback about Osher courses and programs

Encouraging and helping Osher members to engage as volunteers and as faculty

Coordinating the activities of over 200 volunteers to grow and sustain a member-driven model of operations for the Institute

Manage all membership recordkeeping

Create and manage Osher registration processes under direction of UR Registrar

Present Osher membership and program information


Prepare and manage annual program budget and accumulated revenue from Osher fees and tuition

Manage continuous self-sustaining annual budgets utilizing endowment funds and Osher Institute revenues

Manage and monitor operational expenses within the parameters of Osher Grant and University policies

Create and manage course and membership fee structures

Manage accounts payable and account receivable activities for Osher Institute


Supervise the Osher Institute Administrative Coordinator

Oversee the work of more than 200 volunteers to:
Interview, hire, train, supervise, and assess over 100 Osher course leaders annually

Prepare and manage instructor contracts

Develop training materials for volunteer instructors and students

Develop, present and/or secure orientation and other training as necessary for volunteer instructors and other volunteers

Provide member services

Organize and implement fund-raising events for the "Scholarships for SPCS Credit Students" initiative

Promote the Osher Institute to its members and to the greater Richmond area

Maintain volunteer records in compliance with UR policy and Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS)

Lead Osher member volunteers serving on the Osher Institute Advisory Council


Develop and implement all Osher Institute policies and procedures

Prepare statistical reports on memberships, enrollments, and services

Develop and implement a strategic plan for the Osher Institute

Complete special projects as needed


All aspects of creating, developing, directing, and delivering liberal arts programs and curricula

Principles and best practices of adult education

Implementation of programs in adult education

Organizational development and management

Recruitment, development, and management of volunteers

Effective public relations concepts and techniques

Best practices for constituent relations

Ability to create and develop grant concepts and effectively utilize to obtain grants and other funding

Ability to utilize financial management to manage the budget process

Ability to develop and administer a sound business plan, including budgets

Competencies in effective curriculum design and assessment of effective instruction

Ability to develop and implement instructionally sound instructional courses

Fluency with Word and Excel; knowledge of Access, PageMaker, and Banner helpful

Ability to effectively solve problems

Ability to form collaborative coalitions among constituents and partners

Excellent communication skills, both written and oral

Strong interpersonal skills

Strong presentational skills


Bachelor's degree in liberal arts or related content area

Master's degree in education, or related liberal arts area preferred.

3 - 5 years of management experience


Monday - Friday; 8:30 am - 5:00 pm

Required to work evenings and weekends as needed for special programs

Pay Grade 6
