Community Counseling and Mediation, a Brooklyn-based multi-service agency who contracts with the NYC Department of Education, is starting an after-school program at a Family Shelter located in Brownsville, Brooklyn. The program serves 25 students grades 3-8 between the hours of 3-6pm Monday-Thursday (except for days when Department of Education schools are not in session: i.e. holidays, school vacations, etc.) The contract length of the program is from October 2013 - June 2014. The position is for 16 hours per week.

The ideal candidate will:
  • Have completed a college undergraduate degree
  • Have experience working with school-aged children in an academic setting and have a background in youth development
  • Be familiar with the functions of the NYC Department of Education, especially its Committee on Special Education
  • Have some knowledge and experience working with homeless families living within the shelter system and/or the special needs of vulnerable populations
  • Be a hands-on leader who leads by example – helping with homework help, leading group games and ice breakers
  • Be comfortable supervising a small team of 4 youth workers and educators
  • Interface easily with parents of participating children, building trust and offering support
  • Be a strong administrator – tracking staff and student attendance, student homework logs and parent meetings
  • Act as a liaison for the organization in dealings with the on-site DOE Family Workers and shelter agency Director and staff
