Discipleship Coordinator
Junior High Ministry Job Description

The discipleship coordinate will oversee three primary areas of leadership within the Junior High ministry. Those areas include: the small group program, serve opportunities for students, and the Grow Roots discipleship tools. Responsibilities will include resourcing, training and organizing our small group leaders, partnering with Outreach Ministry to offer monthly serve opportunities and on-campus serve experiences for students, and implementing the various discipleship tools for the students.

I. SPECIFIC MINISTRY RESPONSIBILITIES

A. Small Groups

  • Promote small groups in the fall, utilizing the weekend services and various forms of social media.
  • Gathering student sign ups and create new groups.
  • Coordinate houses and meeting places for each group.
  • Resource each small group with desired curriculum, rather it be bought or written in house.
  • Create and maintain the leader bins with materials for each group.
  • Train and equip leaders to be effective small groups leaders with their students.
  • Create a sense of mission for our small groups. It is the hope of the Junior High Ministry to exist for those that are not currently present at the church. Utilize each small group as a collection of missionaries reaching their local community.


  • B. Serve Opportunities

  • Partner with Outreach Ministry to create consistent monthly serve opportunities for students
  • Carry the vision for why we serve at the Mariners Church. Plan to communicate this to staff, leaders, parents and students often through various means.
  • Encourage every small group to serve as a group three times year. Track and equip leaders and families for this.
  • Create or promote on-campus serve opportunities (either in Junior High Ministry or Children’s Ministry).
  • Highlight a story each month in our weekend service. Film, interview, and help a student be able to share their story in front of their peers.
  • Share a story every month in Story Time from a student serve opportunity.
  • Create an awareness of our global partners in the weekend service, highlighting a different partner each time.
  • Partner with Outreach to promote Christmas Wish List, Foster Kids Christmas Party, Military Boxes, money for clean-water wells, etc.
  • C. Discipleship Tools

  • Promote and champion our discipleship efforts for students. This is a non-programmed commitment for students to develop a deeper relationship with Jesus outside of small groups and weekend services.
  • Manage and disseminate the tools of our discipleship(journal, memory verses and Bible reading plan). Create a system of follow-up with volunteers for accountability with students.
  • Order more printing when supplies are low.
  • Develop a tool with the JHM team to coincide with each of our Marines Church values. These will be the tools students can pick from in order to take deeper steps in their faith.


  • II. OTHER MINISTRY RESPONSIBILITIES

    A. General

  • Serve as member of the Junior High Ministry team. Work closely with other staff members to create a deep and meaningful ministry centered on discipleship and helping students develop a relationship with Jesus.
  • Dream, pray, and invest in the ministry.
  • Utilize volunteers wherever possible in the ministry.
  • Attend all camps and events throughout the year. Be prepared to be used wherever necessary at each event.
  • Attend weekend services and ask the Creative Programming Coordinator how you can be used.’
  • Write weekly parent communication letters that will come from the Junior High Pastor. These letters will include a story from the past month in the ministry and pertinent information regarding events and teaching material
  • B.Problem Solving and Decision Making
  • Parents or volunteers who have concerns with Junior High Ministry
  • Evaluating situations and meeting the needs appropriate to the beliefs Mariners Church
  • Trusting the leadership of the church and aligning with the vision and values of Mariners Church as well as our Transformational Loop.
  • C. All Church
  • The Coordinator will be asked to participate in various activities which have all-church implications:
  • Attend monthly staff meetings
  • Attend Story Time weekly
  • III. RELATIONSHIPS

  • Reporting relationship – Coordinator reports to the Junior High Pastor, or in his absence, the Children’s and Family Pastor.
  • Coordinating Relationship – Coordinator will partner with the Director of Operations on the leadership team.
  • Working Relationships – Coordinator works closely with others on the Junior High team and the greater Student Ministries team.

    IV. QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong and growing relationship with Jesus Christ.
  • Interpersonal/management skills – able to supervise, encourage and coach team.
  • An understanding of the challenges and opportunities, which exists in caring for God's people in the context of a large local church.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and organize major events for the ministry.
  • Strong leadership, organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong communication and discretionary skills.
  • A degree or training in education and/or ministry proven experience.
  • Desire to work on a team, and ability to focus on the area of responsibility with excellence.
