POSITION SUMMARY:
Emergency Room Registrar - Under the supervision of the Patient Registration Coordinator, the Emergency Room Registrar is responsible for the registration of patients presenting for Emergency Room treatment. Responsible for answering the phones and placing calls to physicians and other departments as requested. Responsible for assisting patients, patient’s family, friends and general public. Registrar will act as back up for the Out Patient Registrar and Inpatient Registrar after hours.

QUALIFICATION AND REQUIREMENTS:

1. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A. High School Graduate or equivalent required B. One year clerical experience preferred. C. One year previous position experience in Healthcare preferred.

2. SKILLS: A. Must have good problem solving skills, good judgment and organizational skills. B. Must be dependable. C. Ability to communicate intelligently and in a professional manner. D. Must be patient, use tact, have a cheerful disposition and display enthusiasm when registering a patient. E. Must be able to maintain uppermost confidentiality at all times. F. Ability to handle and operate equipment of the task assigned.

3. ABILITIES:
A. PHYSICAL 1. Good general health. 2. Must pass pre-employment drug screening. 3. Annual health screening required. 4. Must be able to perform job functions with proper technique. 5. Minimal lifting i.e., boxes of computer paper weighing 25 to 30 pounds. 6. Manual dexterity to use computer keyboard.

B. MENTAL 1. Must be able to perform in emergency situations. 2. Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position. 3. Must be alert to all activities of the department. 4. Must be able to communicate intelligently and in a professional manner. 5. Must exhibit patience, tact, cheerfulness and enthusiasm, as well as, professionalism and diplomacy with staff, patients, visitors and other hospital associates. 6. Must be able to make decisions independently. 7. Must possess ability to assist patients who cannot read or write understand all forms which they must sign.

4. WORKING CONDITIONS:

A. Must have knowledge of regulatory requirements regarding risks involved in exposure to bloodborne pathogens, and hazardous toxic substances and possibility of being exposed to infectious and contagious diseases.

B. Will work inside under normal temperature conditions, with adequate light, in well ventilated and clean areas. Some areas may have limited space and noise level is mostly moderate.

C. May be exposed to electrical energy hazards and CRT exposure.

D. May be exposed to unpleasant patient elements (accidents, illnesses, injuries and disagreeable bodily odors).

E. May be required to work weekends and off shifts.

5. PUBLIC RELATIONS: Every associate has an important position and with that position there are certain responsibilities. Every associate’s conduct and communication with patients, associates, physicians, visitors and the general public has an impact on the hospital. Associates are expected to maintain a helpful, caring attitude and to be courteous and cheerful when relating to all associates and customers.

6. RESPONSIBILITY FOR GENERAL COMPLIANCE Associate performs within the prescribed limits of the hospital/department Ethics and Compliance program. Is responsible to detect, observe and report compliance variances to their immediate supervisor, or upward through the chain of command, the Compliance Officer or hospital hotline.
