Brookhaven National Laboratory is a nonprofit research and development institution whose purpose is to advance ideas and knowledge through a multidisciplinary program of basic and applied research. The Collider-Accelerator Department currently has a full-time opportunity for a Technical Associate II (Electro-Mechanical).

Under general technical direction, will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, development and remote manipulation of radioactive targets for the Brookhaven Linac Isotope Producer (BLIP), a facility that produces medical radioisotopes with proton beams. Additional duties will include assistance with maintenance of the facilities in the Target Processing Laboratory. The BLIP program is responsible for preparing certain commercially unavailable radioisotopes to distribute to the nuclear medicine community and industry, and to perform research to develop new radioisotopes desired by nuclear medicine investigators. In conjunction with this mission, the group also performs irradiations for non-isotope applications, sells by-products and explores opportunities for new products and radioisotope applications as needed. The lab group is focused on development, production and distribution, both nationally and internationally, of radioisotopes for nuclear medicine imaging and for cancer therapy.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Associate’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering technology or equivalent
Six years of experience that must include demonstrated competence withoperation and maintenance of electro-mechanical equipment
Experience with powered hand and machine shop tools and processes, material properties and mechanical drawing.
Ability to work independently, pass and maintain safety training certifications including radiation worker training, and commitment to follow the safety and environmental operating procedures that will be provided.
Ability to work quickly under time deadlines.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Experience with vacuum system components and water cooling systems
Familiarity with MS Office software
Experience handling radioactive isotope tracers, radioactive waste disposal and gamma ray spectroscopy
