Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai‘i (‘Imiloa), located in Hilo, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.


DUTIES: Collaborates with ‘Imiloa staff and external resources to research, develop, prepare, and deliver engaging, hands-on, inquiry-based curricula and materials consistent with ‘Imiloa core values and endeavors to advance the Center’s mission to share STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) themes through a Hawaiian world view. Acts as lead teacher, project coordinator, and/or host for assigned education programs offered at the Center. Assists with all aspects of field trips. Collaborates with internal and external resources to develop and deliver, or arrange for quality teacher training sessions for PreK-12 teachers. Responsible for documenting, cataloging, and organizing curricula and materials for the educational programs. Develops formal and informal assessments to measure the effectiveness of curricula, and uses these tools to determine whether program objectives are being met. Creates revenue generating products and programs. Assists with collection of data, statistics, and generation of reports required for daily operations as well as grant reporting requirements.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Science, Hawaiian Studies, Communications, Education, or related field (High School diploma with five (5) years of teaching experience in formal and/or informal learning environments may substitute for a Bachelor’s Degree). EXPERIENCE: At least two (2) years of classroom teaching experience and/or informal educational program experience OR Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Education. Experience must include developing STEM curriculum and instruction from a Hawaiian perspective. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Working knowledge of the sciences, standards-based educational programs and curricula, and 4MAT/inquiry-based teaching methodology. Basic understanding of Hawaiian history and cultural practices. Basic understanding of the Hawaiian language. Classroom management skills. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, including, the ability to speak in public and to large groups. Mediation skills or non-confrontational methods to prevent or diffuse conflict or difficult situations. Excellent organizational skills. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to lift thirty-five (35) pounds.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: In-depth knowledge of astronomy, Hawaiian culture and language, and place-based learning. Strong public speaking ability.
