Community Counseling and Mediation, a Brooklyn-based multi-service agency who contracts with the NYC Department of Education, is starting an after-school program at a Family Shelter located in Brownsville, Brooklyn. The program serves 25 students grades 3-8 between the hours of 3-6pm Monday-Thursday (except for days when Department of Education schools are not in session: i.e. holidays, school vacations, etc.) The contract length of the program is from October 2013 - June 2014. The Educational Specialist position is for 14 hours per week.

The ideal candidate will:
  • Have a college degree in Education
  • Be familiar with the functions of the NYC Department of Education, especially its Committee on Special Education
  • Have a working knowledge of the academic curriculum for students in grades 3 – 8 and be familiar with the Common Core curriculum standards for each grade
  • Have experience teaching / tutoring students in the elementary and middle school grades
  • Be comfortable supervising the "Homework Help" session of each afternoon and providing coaching to college age staff and parents of participating students in the art of homework help and tutoring
  • Have some knowledge and experience working with homeless families and/or the special needs of vulnerable populations
  • Be prepared to lead structured academic activities 1-2 days a week after homework help
