***THIS POSITION IS OPEN UNTIL FILLED*** The Facility Services Department is a unit within the Administration and Finance Division. The purpose of the Facility Services Department is to provide quality maintenance and minor repair and renovation services that meet or exceed our customers' expectations. The purpose of the electric shop is to provide quality electrical repair, alteration and minor new construction services to our customers. Under general supervision, incumbents in this classification perform the full range of skilled journey-level electrical and related work including the installation, maintenance, modification and repair of electrical apparatuses, equipment and systems. Incumbents in this classification also may provide instruction and lead direction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants. Duties and Responsibilities Include: Inspect, isolate, troubleshoot and repair electrical malfunctions using various test instruments; operate electrical power-generating plants and other electrical equipment and systems; maintain and repair low voltage systems including fire, alarm and access systems; test electrical equipment for safety and efficiency; plan the layout and wiring of new or remodeled installations; fabricate electrical parts; perform incidental welding as necessary to complete electrical work; advise in the selection and storage of electrical equipment; inspect completed work for conformance with specifications, requirements and compliance with applicable building and safety codes and regulations; inspect related work performed by contractors; estimate cost, time and materials for electrical projects; participate in the maintenance and operations of an electrical shop; clean, maintain and service tools and equipment used in the performance of duties; perform all work in accordance with established safety procedures; and maintain a safe and clean work environment. Maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems, prepare standard reports, and consult and work with other trades workers. Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned. Attend training and maintain skill currency as appropriate to safely and effectively complete assignments.
Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only)
Any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard electrician's apprenticeship program. Possession of a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
Required Qualifications / Specialized Skills
Thorough knowledge of electrical theory and the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the electrical trade for the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical apparatuses, equipment and systems. Thorough knowledge of applicable state and federal codes and regulations pertaining to the electrical trade, including the National Electric Code and Electrical Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety of the State of California. Ability to assemble, install, maintain and repair electrical apparatuses, and to operate all applicable tools and equipment necessary to perform skilled electrical work. Ability to read, interpret and work from blueprints, plans, drawings and specifications; make rough sketches; estimate the cost, time and materials of electrical work; maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and computerized record-keeping systems; prepare standard reports. Implement designs and troubleshoot electrical circuits to meet customer expectations in a cost effective manner. Ability to provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants, analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations, and perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position. Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation which allows the ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the position. Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner appropriate for this position. Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds. Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism. Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems. Ability to interact and communicate in an effective and dependable manner, as well as establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with clientele such as students, staff, faculty, administrators and co-workers. Ability to demonstrate professionalism in entering occupied areas including student residential rooms and apartments on campus by showing respect for the room occupant's privacy and property. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions to ensure safety. Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality. Ability to interpret, communicate, and apply policies and procedures. Ability to work independently with little supervision. Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, on-line systems, Internet as well as online calendaring and email. Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines. Ability to work in a bucket truck or other high lift equipment.
Preferred Qualifications / Skills
Possession of California Class B Driver's License. Experience in running communication and signal conduit; experience with signaling systems (traffic and data). Demonstrated skills in an institutional or construction environment Proficiency in using SCADA maintenance systems.
Special Conditions (Staff)
***THIS POSITION IS OPEN UNTIL FILLED*** Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business. This position may require the ability to obtain AHERA Contractor/Supervisor certification for Asbestos Related Work with annual refresher training and Cal/OSHA Lead in Construction training with annual retraining, as well as, the ability to wear respiratory protection appropriate for the hazard encountered. A Cal/OSHA mandated medical evaluation is required prior to the use of a respirator. Ability to climb stairs and ladders; ability to carry 50 lbs. occasionally, up four flights of stairs; work in confined spaces and high places; squat, kneel, and crawl. Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development. Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis. Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check. The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
