Successful applicants will be required to complete all of the following prior to hire:
Receives and transmits routine and emergency telephone, radio, and computer messages and dispatches required law enforcement, fire, and/or ambulance personnel and equipment. Maintains continual radio contact with all on-duty personnel responding to calls or initiating calls. This is an entry-level position within the Emergency Communications Operator series. This class is used as a training class for incumbents typically without prior or with little experience and knowledge in this field or area. Positions in this class work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks. Work is characterized by development of basic and routine skills and knowledge required to perform the job such as dispatching practices and procedures for law enforcement, fire, emergency medical services, dive team, search and rescue, etc.
- Typing test - Only applicants who type 40 words per minute or greater will be considered for hire.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Receives immediate supervision from Emergency Communications Supervisor on duty; functional and technical supervision are provided by higher-level communications staff.
- Exercises no supervision.
- Receive incoming 9-1-1 hardwire and cellular telephone calls, non-emergency phone calls, inter-office phone calls, and ring-down lines; obtain pertinent information, prioritize calls, take messages for duty personnel, and transfer callers.
- Dispatch necessary emergency personnel including law enforcement units, fire departments, ambulance departments, and other agencies as needed.
- Maintain radio contact with units on assignments.
- Send, receive, record, and disseminate teletype information from the state and national computer; maintain NCIC/CCIC certification.
- Enter data into computer systems or databases; look up information in database; create basic word processor documents and enter data into spreadsheets; use email to communicate.
- Read maps and verbally describe detailed directions via radio or phone.
- Maintain access and dissemination of confidential information.
- Perform extensive computer work for criminal histories, background checks, previous contacts, warrants, officer safety information, etc.
- Monitor building security alarm system, national warning phone, radio equipment, phone equipment, and all other essential job related equipment.
- Perform Emergency Medical Dispatching for all medical calls received in the communications center.
- Perform all tasks requested by law enforcement units, emergency services, volunteer fire and ambulance departments.
- Compile data and maintain records of emergency recorded, equipment and personnel dispatched, and dispositions of emergencies.
- Page and dispatch ambulances and/or tow trucks and rescue squads when requested.
- Coordinate search and rescue efforts, disaster emergencies, motorized patrol units, and prisoner relays.
- Perform other duties as assigned or necessary for performance of the job.

- Correct English usage, spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
- Learn the radio dispatching procedures and rules associated with the operation of law enforcement, emergency services, fire, and ambulance communication network.
- Learn interoperability radio and implementation of radio patching.
- Communicate effectively orally, in writing and via various forms of electronic media.
- Use office automation systems, including basic proficiency with computer applications such as e-mail, word processor, spreadsheet and database look-up and/or entry.
- Learn the TTY System on the VESTA Phones (communication with hearing impaired callers.)
- Learn Sheriff's Office and County rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and standard operation procedures.
- Work under stress and exercise good judgment in emergency situations.
- Prioritize tasks.
- Perform a variety of clerical duties, including extensive computer work.
- Perform duties independently without close supervision.
- Establish and maintain effective work relationships with a diverse population to include the public, staff, other criminal justice agency personnel, and county government staff.
- Read and interpret maps.
- Perform typing functions within required words per minute.
- Work on a shift schedule as assigned.
- Recognize different colors on control console - must not be colorblind.
- No experience required.
- High School diploma or GED; completion of 20-24 week training in Larimer County Sheriff's Office Communications Center and ability to obtain and maintain a project upon completion of training.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, CPR D certification by date of hire.
- Obtain EMD certification during training phase.
- Must have acceptable hearing to monitor radio transmissions and appropriate voice skills to be clearly understood on radio, telephone, and intercoms.
- May be required to sit for long periods of time.
- Must have acceptable eyesight and must be able to clearly distinguish specific colors and shaded or hues of colors.
- Must have use of arms, hands, and fingers to manually operate all switches, buttons, and dials and to perform computer duties.
- Must be able to work under stressful situations, such as responding to an emergency and handling radio traffic at the same time, dealing with irate or frantic citizens, and receiving directives from several sources.
- May be involved in situations which are violent, distasteful, highly emotional, or representative of all levels of criminal conduct.
- Must be able to talk extensively on intercoms, phones, and radios.
- Must be able to record accurate information.
- Must have good cognitive skills and awareness of work accuracy.
- Must have ability to concentrate on more than one task at a time and to make independent decisions.
- Must be able to work on a rotating shift schedule as assigned.
