POSITION DESCRIPTION

DEPARTMENT: Emergency Services
POSITION TITLE: Emergency Department Technician/PCT

CLASSIFICATION:
REPORTS TO: Department Director, Charge Nurse, &/or
House Supervisor

I. BASIC FUNCTION

Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, the Emergency Department Technician (EDT) is responsible for providing patient care for his/her specified department/shift. The EDT must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to patients of all age groups, from pediatrics to geriatrics. Care will be provided in accordance with physician orders, the Joint Commission standards which includes the National Patient Safety Goals, OSHA regulations, CMS quality initiatives, and nursing / departmental guidelines for care.

II. Major Responsibilities and Accountabilities

A. Clerical - Consistently performs all clerical responsibilities identified on the skills checklist.

1. Demonstrates knowledge of medical terminology.
2. Accurately transcribes orders and enters orders in computerized order entry system.
3. Communicates orders with ancillary departments.
4. Accurately posts reports from ancillary departments in the medical record.
5. Assembles patient charts and organizes patient flow to assist ED physician.
6. Records pertinent information on the appropriate logs.
7. Inventories office supplies and orders as necessary.

B. Communication Skills: Demonstrates appropriate communication.

1. Maintains a courteous and professional manner in all interactions with public and hospital personnel.
2. Consistently communicates pertinent information to co-workers and physicians.
3. Utilizes nursing services computer system to facilitate the delivery of patient care.
4. Triages telephone calls and refers to the appropriate personnel.
5. Directs and facilitates patient care by having a comprehensive understanding of the situation in the department at any given time.

C. Clinical Skills: Consistently performs all clinical skills safely, efficiently and in a cost-effective manner.
1. Performs only those skills in which training has been completed.
2. All skills must be competencied by the Medical Director of the Emergency Department.

D. Documentation: Accurately documents data in the medical record according to policies and procedures.

E. Safety: Readily recognizes emergency situations and takes appropriate action while following safety related policies and procedures.
1. Adheres to all safety and infection control policies and procedures.
2. Reports accidents, errors and unusual incidents to the Charge Nurse, Department Director or House Supervisor at the time of the occurrence.

III. Hospital Wide Responsibilities/Accountabilities

A. Participates in the Improving Organizational Performance (IOP) process.
B. Performs job duties in a manner that supports THE CORE VALUES and meets performance standards.
C. Meets attendance requirements of absenteeism and lateness.
D. Attends mandatory inservices.
E. Adheres to hospital policies supporting patient rights.
F. Participates in development and attainment of department and/or WCCH Goals.
G. Reports any suspected violations of Corporate Compliance to an immediate supervisor, Corporate Compliance Officer, or the Compliance Hot-Line.
H. Adheres to WCCH policies and procedures regarding privacy and security of health information (HIPAA).
I. Works collaboratively to provide a safe environment for not only the patient, but staff and visitors.

A. Education
(R) 1. High school diploma or equivalent
(R) 2. Basic computer skills

B. Experience
(R) 1. Nursing Assistant or Emergency Medical Technician experience
(P) 1. Secretarial experience

C. Licensures/Certifications
(R) 1. Basic Life Support
(R) 2. CNA, EMT, or completion of one semester of an accredited Nursing Program.

V. Physical Demands

The physical demands of the Emergency Department Technician include sitting (70% of work time), standing (10% of work time), and walking (20% of work time). The majority of time spent is at the Nursing Station. Duties vary: paperwork, operating office equipment, lifts and positions patients, pushes, pulls, and lifts equipment and supplies, and uses fine and gross motor skills. May be required to lift 75 to 100 pounds, carry 50 to 75 pounds, push 200 to 250 pounds. Pulling 250 pounds or greater requires assistance.
