Assists in the inspection of roadways and structures consisting of a combination of operations such as erosion control, traffic control devices, conventional or nuclear densities on embankments, performs a variety of calculations, computations, and documentation. Employee is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions and to a wide range of hazards at construction sites, including heights, walking on uneven terrain, heavy equipment and highway traffic. Employee must be able to lift approximately 40 to 50 pounds (includes lifting of concrete cylinders, asphalt samples, and nuclear gauge equipment). Position may require work on Survey Party. This position functions as a Contributing Level technician.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:

Some knowledge of surveying, highway construction or design and general knowledge of mathematical functions. Will be required to perform calculations for material quantities and/or surveying data. Skill in the use of office equipment such as calculators, computer terminals, and drafting skills. Ability to read and interpret construction plans, contract provisions and inspection procedures. Will be required to attend and pass certifications for various sampling and testing classes and shall be required to obtain and maintain QMS Asphalt and Concrete Testing Certifications. Must have a valid NC driver’s license in order to operate a state motor vehicle. Safety toe shoes are required.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Associate's degree in the assigned discipline; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require certification. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. . . .
