This is a seasonal position which usually works 40 hours per week primarily day hours (depending upon the weather) from April through December with no benefits. The starting salary is $13.00 per hour. The current vacancy is assigned to work in the Materials Lab which is located at 11283 Schaefer Drive in Maryland Heights.
Examples of Duties:
Perform construction materials testing by: conducting routine field and lab materials tests, such as moisture and air content, temperature, etc., on concrete, aggregates and soils, asphalt components, and other surfacing materials; making concrete cylinders for storage and laboratory testing; signing material tickets for acceptance of materials; core drilling of pavements and retrieval of concrete cylinders from project sites and manufacturing plants.
Perform roadway construction inspection tasks by: checking construction sites for proper backfill, reinforcing steel placement, concrete mixture, and conformance of work to approved plans, specifications and standards; inspecting open excavations for proper depth, and compaction of soils; checking pavements for surface irregularities; observing construction site work for proper traffic control devices and barricade placement; observing work in progress and at various stages and intervals to check for work procedures and compliance with specifications and standards.
Perform administrative tasks associated with roadway construction testing and inspections by: maintaining required daily inspection records, deficiency reports, materials slips and related forms; maintaining records of tests for future reference; reading and interpreting construction plans to determine work routines and to determine what must be inspected.
Supports roadway construction by performing surveying field work and document/record keeping.
Perform such other work as may properly be required of a position in this job class. EQUIPMENT USED: (Illustrative examples) Automobile, van, light-duty truck; laptop computer; aggregate grading sieves and shakers, power saw, concrete air meter and slump cones and other materials testing devices.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Exposure to dust/dirt, fumes and hazardous materials; ability to move objects weighing 50 pounds a distance of 20 feet or more, bend, stoop, lift, push/pull; stand or walk for long periods; climb ladders, work in extreme temperatures and out of doors in inclement weather.
One year of roadway, related construction inspection experience or college coursework in algebra, geometry and trigonometry; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
A current, valid driver's license is required.
