GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS: The purpose of the class is to operate complex heavy equipment necessary in the maintenance, repair and upkeep of ci

ty facilities. The class is responsible for crew leadership, routine maintenance procedures, safe and effective loading and operation, and storage. The class is responsible for loading, driving, and unloading trucks at various City Project sites or other agency locations. The class works within a general outline of work to be performed; develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.

ESSENTIAL TASKS:
Operates specialized equipment, machinery or vehicles, such as heavy construction vehicles, trucks with hydraulic pumping equipment, pressure sprayers, paving equipment, jackhammers, backhoes, or cranes.

Operates a broad range of heavy to light equipment and tools, such as blowers, edging tools, sprayers, shovels, rakes, and brooms.

Removes debris, litter, earth, or pavement; loads material into trucks; locates and excavates underground structures or pipelines; sets poles; clears land or mows grassy areas, such as parks, playgrounds, medians, roadsides and hillsides.
Work includes driving trucks and other vehicles according to established safety standards, transporting and delivering heavy loads with a Gross Combination Weight Rating exceeding 26,000 lbs. on roads ranging from interstate highways to undeveloped, unpaved roads and drive in environments ranging from urban locations to remote sites.

Inspects equipment to ensure safe operations.

Performs preventative maintenance on all equipment and tools.

Assembles and loads equipment, tools, materials and supplies according to daily work assignments.

Follows established safety rules and regulations for the safe operation of equipment and machinery; reports accidents, equipment breakage and unsafe conditions to a supervisor.

Determines amount and type of materials, equipment and/ or tools necessary to complete tasks; assigns work; supervises and instructs others.

Completes routine documents and forms, such as work orders, repair requests, reports and logs.

INVOLVEMENT WITH THINGS:
Requires leading, operating, and/ or repairing complex machinery or equipment that requires extended training and experience such as heavy construction equipment, trucks using hydraulic pumping equipment, dump trucks, box trucks, front end loaders, street sweepers, backhoes, asphalt rollers, asphalt pavers, hydraulic lift trucks, bushhogs, leaf trucks, jackhammers, gangmowers, tractors, or electronic signaling equipment; may involve installation and/ or testing.

COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS
REASONING REQUIREMENTS:
Requires performing skilled work involving rules/ systems with almost constant problem solving.

MATHEMATICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Requires performing basic addition and subtraction, such as making change or measuring.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:
Requires reading basic sentences, instructions, or work orders; writing simple sentences and completing uncomplicated job forms; speaking sentences using basic grammar.

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Requires specialized technical work requiring general understanding of operating policies and procedures and their application to problems not previously encountered; application of specialized technical principles and practices in the solution of problems; requires normal attention with short periods of concentration for accurate results and occasional exposure to unusual pressure.

JUDGMENTS AND DECISION-MAKING REQUIREMENTS:
Requires being responsible for guiding others, requiring frequent decision, affecting coworkers, and others who depend on the service or product; works in a somewhat fluid environment with rules and procedures, but with many variations from the routine.

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE PREPARATION
VOCATIONAL/ EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION:
Requires high school diploma, GED, or specialized vocational training. Requires thorough knowledge of the safe operation of a range of vehicles and material handling equipment (i.e. cab-over, day cab, and conventional tractors; flatbed, lowboy, car carrier, 53 foot, and wide load trailers) within the scope of the commercial Class A driver's license which includes ensuring that material is loaded in accordance with weight distribution guidelines and limitations.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
Requires a valid State of Texas Class "A" CDL.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Requires over one year and up to and including two years.

PHYSICAL DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS:
Requires light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time, exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis, considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy.

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS:
The job risks exposure to dusts and pollen, extreme heat and/ or cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels, vibration, fumes and/ or noxious odors, traffic, moving machinery, and electrical shock.

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
The job requires normal visual acuity, and field of vision, hearing, speaking and depth perception.
