Performs work of considerable difficulty in operating heavy equipment or other various loading methods. Duties include operating a front-end loader with tandem axle, rear end loader and side loader to haul solid waste; operate other related heavy equipment, maintenance of equipment and making minor repairs; inspecting equipment, checking fuel, oil, grease, water, filters, tires and overall general condition of equipment. Completes route sheets, notices, service requests and other forms as necessary. Supervises Public Service Workers in the collection of refuse and/or various materials. Responsible for knowing and complying with all UCG and division safety rules and for attending safety meetings. and other related duties.

QUALIFICATIONS

Qualifications
Must be able to demonstrate considerable knowledge of:
- the principles and practices of operating heavy equipment Skill in the operation of heavy equipment under all types of weather and working conditions.

Ability to:
- respect the traffic laws, occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to such equipment;
- Learn the location of streets and roads in the Lexington-Fayette Urban County area;
- learn Urban County Government collection, weighing and disposal practices and procedures.
- understand and follow oral and written instructions;
- plan and supervise the work of others;
- make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment;
- follow schedules and complete daily reports as required;
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Completion of a high school education or GED and two (2) years of experience operating heavy
equipment (at the level of an Equipment Operator); or equivalent combination of experience and education which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Possession of a commercial driver license (class B) issued by the Commonwealth of Kentucky and a valid Department of Transportation Medical Examiner's Certificate.

Must be available for emergency and on-call duty.

Subject to random drug and alcohol testing during employment

Hepatitis vaccination offered.

Must have the strength and agility to allow the employee to perform job duties which would be found at the level of medium work (i.e. exerting 20-50 pounds of force occasionally and/or 10-25 pounds of force frequently) include lifting, carrying, walking, sitting, climbing, repetitive motions, and operating gages and hand throttles. Working conditions include regular exposure to continuous noises, contagious diseases, wet and humid surroundings, extreme hot or cold temperatures, vibrations, fumes, dust, odors, exposure to chemicals, and working around traffic.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

May be assigned to perform duties of higher or lower level classifications in this or related class series and/or perform duties on a temporary or acting basis in accordance with Ordinances 21-15 and 21-16 and/or act as a lead worker. Responsible for knowing and complying with all UCG and division safety rules and for attending safety meetings.

*Performing duties as a Public Service Worker requires performing job duties which would be found at the level of very heavy work (i.e. exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently).

EXAMINATIONS

Prior to application submission, applicants must successfully pass (70% or better) a written test (70%) administered. Exams will be administered on a walk-in, first come/first serve basis during the hours of 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday in the Division of Human Resources at the LFUCG Government Center, 200 East Main Street--8th Floor, Lexington, Kentucky 40507. Exams will only be administered during the job posting period and not beyond the filing deadline.

Applicants passing the driving exam must pass (70 or better) a training and experience evaluation from the information provided on the application at the filing deadline weighted at 30% of the final score.

Applicants who pass the above exams will be invited to take a driving test, weighted at 70% of the final score, which must be passed (70% or better) before an invitation to succesfully pass a physical strength and agility test.

Applicants must pass all the above tests and achieve a scaled score of 70 or better before being placed on the eligibility list.
