Executive Director of the Strategic Communications Agency
The University of Florida†s College of Journalism and Communications invites applications for an Executive Director of the Strategic Communications Agency at the University of Florida†s College of Journalism & Communications is a key member of the senior management team and the primary steward of the College†s student-staffed advertising, public relations, and digital communications service operation. As a direct report to the Dean of the College, the Director will oversee the creation and operations of the College†s Strategic Communications Agency with a goal of making it sustainable in support of students.
Required Qualifications : The candidate must have a Master's degree in an appropriate area of specialization and six years of appropriate experience; or a bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization and eight years of appropriate experience. The Executive Director must have experience successfully supervising others in a financial environment.
Preferred Qualifications : Ten or more years of professional experience in advertising and/or public relations, including senior management experience. Proven business development experience in an agency setting. A bachelor†s degree, preferably in advertising, public relations, or communications. In-depth understanding of how successful agencies function, including client recruitment and retention, developing and training staff, and business and billing operations. A strong and vibrant professional network. Enthusiasm for the opportunities created by mobile and digital applications. An appreciation of the value of storytelling across multiple platforms.
Responsibilities : Create an energetic, professional, and self-sustaining agency from the ground up. The Executive Director will be responsible for the development of final physical layout, policies and procedures, the calculation of an operational budget, and the mentorship of student staffers. Identify and recruit clients. The Executive Director will be responsible for cultivating and securing clients not only from the University of Florida and the Gainesville community, but also throughout the United States and around the world.
Hire and train qualified students on conducting business for clients. The Executive Director†s goal will be to create an agency that is remarkable and distinguished among student-staffed agencies and that can be a valuable partner to well-established, specialized agencies. It is expected that the Executive Director designs a training program and a rotation system for the student staff to experience different roles.
Act as a liaison to faculty and other scholars to ensure that the agency†s work is grounded in sound research and best practice. The Executive Director will ensure that the agency capitalizes on the unique resources available to it, including access to preeminent scholars, teachers, and experts in the sister communications disciplines and related areas.
Create policies and procedures, including specific direction for hiring students, billing clients, and a creating a code of agency ethics. The Executive Director will be responsible for developing the procedural model for the agency. This will include establishing the operational foundation of the agency.
Prepare budget and manage the agency. The director will oversee all the financial and budgetary functions of the agency, including annual budgeting, reporting, and forecasting of business operations and staffing. The Executive Director will work closely with the College†s Finance Director.
Establish an executive advisory council of industry representatives who can lend direction, advice, and the power of their own national and international professional networks to the agency†s success.
