This position is represented by the International Association of Fire Fighters - Local 1264 (IAFF) and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the IAFF. If the person selected is not affiliated with the International Association of Fire Fighters – Local 1264 union, he or she must become a member in good standing within 30 days of beginning work.
DEPARTMENT: Anchorage Fire Department (AFD)
LOCATION OF WORK: Various Stations
HOURS OF WORK: 56 hour Kelly Schedule
Example of Duties:
Under the direction of the Fire Captain provide fire, rescue, and emergency medical care services. As an emergency medical technician or paramedic, examine, treat, care for, and transport sick and injured patients. Complete reports and maintain records. Prevent, combat, and extinguish fires. Provide rescue services. Perform apparatus and station maintenance duties. Complete professional training and study programs. Stand-by for emergency response. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Special Qualifications:
State of Alaska Emergency Medical Technician I Certification or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician I Certification (will accept EMT II or III certifications)
- High School diploma, GED, or equivalent
- At least 18 years old by time of hire
- Valid State of Alaska Driver’s License
- Must possess by time of hire:
State of Alaska Mobile Intensive Care Paramedic License or National Registry EMT-Paramedic Certification
For applicants who do not possess a current EMT or Paramedic license/certification, the AFD will be offering the following EMT course April 15th - June 1st, 2013:
The Anchorage Fire Department will hold a class for EMT 1 certification beginning April 16, 2013 at the Fire Training Center, 1140 Airport Heights Drive. This is a 6 week course that occurs 3 evenings and all day Saturday each week, with final testing on June 1, 2013. Fees for the course are $1,400 which includes books and the EMT I certification testing fee for successful attendees. All position required certifications and licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.
TESTING INFORMATION AND NOTIFICATION:
Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications, have acceptable employment records, and meet Municipal standards related to driving guidelines and criminal conviction history may be invited to participate in the Firefighter Testing Process.
Applicants invited to test will be notified of the testing date, time, and location via e-mail between April 24 – April 26, 2013 . Ensure the email address provided on the application is valid and current. Testing notifications will only be sent to the email address listed on the application.
