Capella University seeks out faculty who combine top academic credentials with working or practitioner experience in the fields they teach. Faculty are responsible for meeting the expectations and requirements of the Capella learner while establishing and maintaining effective relationships. Faculty ensure that learners receive quality educational experiences consistent with stated course outcomes as well as accreditation standards. Responsibilities of Mentors:
Successful mentors have the ability to guide and coach learners through the dissertation process by promoting a positive, collaborative relationship that enhances learner engagement, satisfaction, retention and success. Mentors are committed to providing timely direction and support to mentees throughout the dissertation phase of the program. Mentors may also participate in the comprehensive exam preparation phase as well.
Mentors have research knowledge and the ability to understand and evaluate all aspects of the research process, including application. They also have an in-depth understanding of the end-to-end research process (dissertation design, execution, and completion) while working with mentees as a dissertation supervisor and chair of the dissertation committee. Mentors apply their in-depth knowledge of IRB standards, regulations, and processes at each stage of the dissertation process and consult with expert colleagues, related literature and other available school resources when research methods and design questions or concerns arise.
Mentors monitor, evaluate and guide learner progress, including establishing and discussing dissertation expectations and criteria-based assessment techniques with mentees. Mentors also assess mentee's work and ensure the achievement of quality compliance standards for research prior to submittal to IRB.
Mentors ensure the efficient administration of the dissertation process for mentees by implementing Capella policies and procedures (including milestone procedures and IRB regulations), and manage the dissertation committee through timely and effective communication about progress, feedback, or concerns.
Please note: we are building a pool of candidates interested in being mentors, and it may take a few academic terms to determine our learners' progress toward their dissertation. Key Differences Between Adjunct and Part-Time Faculty:
Adjunct faculty members are not engaged with Capella in a continuous relationship. They are assigned work as they are available and as Capella has needs.
Part-time faculty engage in a continuous relationship with Capella, and we are committed to providing work assignments on an ongoing quarterly basis. Only part-time faculty members may participate in Mentoring or Committee work assignments or any other work assignment that may span four or more quarters.
All faculty candidates will be required to complete 2 unpaid faculty development courses as a pre-requisite for employment. This is an essential part of the selection process for both the faculty member and Capella.
PhD required from a regionally accredited institution. Degree must be in Information Technology, or a technology related field. Professional certification in the field is preferred.
Graduate level teaching experience of 3 years or more; online teaching experience preferred.
Significant scholar - practitioner experience in the field, plus a demonstrated capability of doing research, evidenced by publication in peer-reviewed journals, or journals, and/or conference presentations..
Previous experience preferred in dissertation mentoring and advising, and/or dissertation committee work.
Evidence of supporting learner success and commitment to mentoring in an online learning environment.
This is an off-site position.
