MilTech is a DoD, Office of the Secretary of Defense, Office of Technology Transition Partnership Intermediary and provides hands-on product design, prototyping, technology scouting, and manufacturing assistance to transition innovative technology to the US warfighter rapidly, reliably, and cost-effectively.

The employee in this position will be a MilTech Field Engineer assigned to the sewn products team and will be an interface for the sewn products, outdoor gear, military armor and load bearing systems and accessories industry, and manufacturing partners. This will require remote-site visits at industry locations to determine customer requirements and select materials, design parameters, design partners and final objectives. The employee will work with multiple contractors, government staff partners and internal MSU and MilTech staff to manage MilTech military sewn products projects and to oversee the industry partners on projects. The position may also be assigned to technology scouting, manufacturing process or other tasks.

Duties and

The employee will be primarily responsible for working with other MilTech staff in developing and managing outdoor gear, military sewn products, and armor and load bearing systems and accessories industry partnerships. This includes suppliers, manufacturers, designers, developers, retailers, users, and more. This will be done in order to execute projects to the satisfaction of MilTech DoD customers. The employee will be responsible for evaluating, selecting, and overseeing MilTech partners in these industries.

The employee will work directly with industry partners, government and DoD customers and partners, and MSU and MilTech staff to execute and manage projects. The employee will be responsible for industry partner contract and statement of work generation, oversight, and management to ensure that MilTech industry partners perform as necessary to meet the mission requirements of both MilTech and the MilTech DoD customers. The employee will attend Field User Evaluations in remote areas and will travel to DoD customer and industry partner locations. The employee will answer to the MilTech Director and DoD and military customers.

The employee must possess significant prior experience and knowledge of the outdoor gear and / or military sewn products and armor and load bearing systems and accessories industry in order to exercise the independent authority and judgment required to evaluate, select, and ensure that industry partners in these industries perform as necessary to meet mission and project requirements. The person in this position must have experience managing multiple vendor contracts to meet quality requirements and deadlines.

The employee will have regular phone, email and personal contact with all stakeholders and must communicate professionally and clearly. The position requires that the employee be able to gather military gear user input and translate that into the necessary information for production of samples for the MilTech military customer. The employee will work extensively with other MilTech staff on sewn products and other projects and must work cooperatively and in support or leadership roles depending on the project.


Possess a bachelor's degree from an ABET accredited engineering program or an advanced engineering degree from a college that offers an ABET accredited engineering degree. **OR** Engineering degree from a non-ABET school AND a Professional Engineering (PE) license.

Possess significant industrial and manufacturing management experience, specifically in the sewn products, outdoor gear, or military load bearing and armor industries or consulting experience with progressively increasing levels of responsibility in solving manufacturing, design, product development, engineering and management problems.

Have working knowledge of manufacturing processes and problems, military and outdoor gear sewn products manufacturing processes and equipment, sewn product development, Mil-SPEC and Berry Compliant sewn product production, sewn products and outdoor gear fabrics and other raw materials, and product design as it relates to manufacturing.

Possess experience effectively communicating project objectives, plans, progress and results with proven ability to prepare and provide presentations to small and large audiences on manufacturing, management and technology transition topics.

Be able to effectively evaluate, select, oversee, and manage staff and industry partners

Have experience solving manufacturing process, material, quality or other problems in support of product development or delivery.


Extensive knowledge of and relationships with designers, developers, manufacturers, and materials suppliers in the military sewn products and armor and load bearing systems and accessories industry.

Knowledge of U.S. government and military contracting and procurement guidelines to include various funding vehicles and mechanisms such as broad agency agreements, GSA schedule placement, NSN assignment, RFPs and RFIs, UARC, and more.

A master’s degree in engineering or business.

Certifications in areas relevant to design, project management or manufacturing from recognized certification bodies such as ASQ, PMI, etc..

Experience working in or as a consultant to small design and/or manufacturing companies in the role of a consultant or manager

Ability to work in multiple technology and manufacturing areas outside of the sewn products industry.

The Successful
Candidate Will

  • be able to represent MilTech in a professional manner when interacting with clients, internal, and external personnel

  • be able to work cooperatively with MSU and MilTech staff and MilTech military and civilian customers

  • be able to regularly travel independently and work directly with internal staff, customers, industry partners, and potential partners

  • be able to effectively collaborate with MilTech, MSU, DoD, government, civilian, internal, and external personnel in order to accomplish multiple operational goals


    Position is located in Bozeman, Montana.

    Regular travel on short notice and planned travel when necessary to interact with DoD customers: Employee must be available to travel throughout the Continental United States as well as Alaska, Hawaii, U.S territories and possessions, and possibly other worldwide locations with or without accommodations.

    In accordance with MSU policy, hiring will be conditional upon successful completion of a pre-employment background check.
