Non-exempt; part time; minimum of 48 hours of availability per month required, varied days, hours and shift assignments as scheduled; no benefits

When assigned to duty, this skilled position provides a full range of fire/rescue services including firefighting, rescue and emergency medical services (EMS), as well as routine non-emergency assignments. Supervision and direction are received from the fire/rescue station supervisor and/or through the chain of command, however Firefighters must frequently exercise independent judgment and discretion. Work station and duty assignment will be determined by the County.

Examples of Work:
  • Respond on emergency apparatus to render aid to sick and injured persons and provide EMS patient care at a wide variety of emergency incidents
  • Drive and operate emergency vehicles and equipment
  • Respond to and extinguish fires and effect rescues
  • Perform rescues from burning buildings and other hazardous situations
  • Perform heavy-duty rescues utilizing cutting torches, hydraulic jacks, air compressors and other specialized rescue equipment
  • Maintain equipment and emergency vehicle readiness by performing regular maintenance and tests
  • Perform routine maintenance of the fire and rescue station
  • Write accurate, comprehensive fire, rescue and medical reports regarding incidents
  • Assist with routine administrative tasks
  • Maintain knowledge of current roads, water supplies and building pre-plans
  • Conduct routine fire safety inspections
  • Maintain knowledge of current Maryland Protocols
  • Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications & Requirements:
  • High school graduation or the equivalent
  • Minimum age 21 years at the time of application
  • Minimum 3 years of recent (within the last 4 years) verifiable active operational Fire/Rescue and EMT experience
  • Possession of current State of Maryland EMT-B, EMT-I or EMT-P
  • Certification as a NFPA 1001- Firefighter II (MFSPQB or NFSPQB) or equivalent as determined by the Division
  • Certification as a NFPA 1006 – Rescue Technician – Vehicle and Machinery Rescue (MFSPQB or NFSPQB) or equivalent as determined by the Division
  • Certification at the Hazardous Materials Operations level (MFSPQB or NFSPQB) or equivalent as determined by the Division
  • Successful completion of the Emergency Vehicle Operator's Course (EVOC) or equivalent as determined by the Division, or the ability to complete this training course prior to an offer of employment being extended
  • Successful completion of the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute’s Firefighter Safety and Survival training course or equivalent as determined by the Division, or the ability to complete this training course prior to an offer of employment being extended
  • Successful completion of National Incident Management System (NIMS) ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800 on-line training courses, or the ability to complete these training courses prior to an offer of employment being extended
  • Current CPR certification as accepted by the Division
  • Possession of a valid MD automobile operator's license (or an equivalent license as determined by the Division); Ability to be approved by the County’s Risk Management Office to drive a County insured vehicle
  • Ability to maintain minimum EMS and job related ce r tifications or licensures and maintain EMS affiliation with Frederick C ounty DFRS throughout term of employment
  • Ability to successfully complete p e riodic physical fitness training and successfully complete the Division’s Fire Work Performance Evaluation (WPE) program required on a periodic basis as defined by the Division.
  • Ability to successfully complete required DFRS training (prior to assignments)
  • Ability to apply training to respond quickly, calmly and effectively in emergency situations, demonstrating good judgment and independent action
  • Strong and effective spoken and written (English) communication skills, including the ability to understand and effectively carry out written and spoken orders and standard operating procedures
  • Ability to maintain professional attitude, appearance and manner of performance
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, volunteer and career personnel and the general public
  • Physical requirements include the ability to lift at least 100 pounds; to respond to the spontaneous physical demands of comprehensive fire/rescue and EMS duties, all of which may require standing, walking, crawling, lifting, bending, stooping, driving, climbing stairs and ladders, working at extreme heights, and working indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions. Examples of these fire/rescue and EMS activities include: respond to all manner of emergency calls; rescue persons from hazardous situations; lift patients of any size/weight using various devices; use manual, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic and power tools during firefighting/rescue efforts; wear and use specialized protective gear including self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)
  • Physical requirements necessitate that facial hair is maintained to properly wear SCBA full- and half-piece air purifying respirators and other job-specific safety equipment, and pass SCBA fit test throughout employment
  • Possession of a valid MD Non-Commercial Class A or B license
  • Possession of a valid MD Commercial Class A or B license
  • Currently licensed as a MD State EMT-P or certified as a National Registry Paramedic at the time of application
  • Verifiable active operational Fire Rescue and EMT experience (DFRS to verify) as a Frederick County MD Fire Rescue Volunteer
  • Additional related education, training and/or experience

Additional Information/Examination Process:
  • Completion of DFRS Annual Compliance Training on an annual basis
  • Available for all shifts as assigned and on-call as needed
  • Satisfactory background investigation
  • Abstinence from all tobacco use
  • This position is subject to random drug testing
  • Specified certifications, licenses and physical abilities stated above must be maintained throughout term of employment
  • Based on level of ALS certifications at time of hire, a higher rate of pay may be in effect
  • Part-time employees will be subject to all hiring requirements as stipulated in any full-time employment process
