Performs skilled work in fire suppression, emergency medical services, fire prevention, inspection and training. This is a progressive apprenticeship position in accordance with the North Port Fire Rescue District Apprenticeship FireMedic Program.

DUTIES: Respond to public emergencies involving fire and/or other medical emergencies in the capacity of a firefighter/EMT. Performs work in a safe and efficient manner compliant with City and District rules, regulations, policies and procedures; promotes the well-being of himself/herself, the City and others through participation in external and internal District programs; knowledgeable and responsible for the application and practical use of the rules, regulations, general orders, standard operating guidelines and general functions (Mission Statement) of the District. (These essential job functions are not to be construed as a complete statement of all duties performed. Employees will be required to perform other related duties as assigned, including City-directed work assignments in the event of a declared emergency.)

QUALIFICATIONS: In addition to the requirements listed in the Licenses and Certificates section, graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma is required. Progressive knowledge and application of firefighting and emergency medical skills; ability to understand and carry out verbal and/or written instructions promptly, effectively, and efficiently under varied and difficult conditions; ability to establish and maintain effective working skills and knowledge; ability to read, write and interpret English (Documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, policy and procedure manuals); ability to speak, interpret and convey effectively, in English, before groups of customers or employees of organization; ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry; ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, formulas, dosages, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume; ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form; ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations; computer literate - must possess the skills necessary to use word processing type programs and basic computer operations.

CERTIFICATES/LICENSES/REGISTRATIONS: Possession of a valid driver’s license, and the ability to obtain a valid Florida driver’s license by date of hire; valid EMT license issued by the State of Florida; State of Florida Firefighter Certificate of Compliance/Minimum Standards; valid CPR card; successfully passing the National Testing Network (NTN) administered Candidate Physical Abilities Test (CPAT) within the past 12 months; other certifications as mandated by the City, Medical Director and/or State of Florida.
