Non-exempt; grant-funded; no-benefits; part-time / on-call coverage; varying shifts between 5 a.m. - 10:30 p.m.; Monday - Saturday

This position is responsible for operating a transit-type bus or other TransIT vehicle to transport the general public, including persons with disabilities. Supervision is received from the Operations Supervisor and/or the Operations Manager.

Examples of Work:
  • Transport customers within approximately a 100-mile radius on deviated and fixed route assignments
  • Collect fares and tickets from passengers as appropriate
  • Assist passengers in boarding and departing the vehicle when necessary and assist them with parcels or other items
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections
  • Wash, clean and fuel the assigned vehicle and perform minor maintenance functions
  • Record and report needed repairs to supervisors
  • Record and report mileage and ridership
  • Maintain a daily activity trip summary and other related reports
  • Collect survey data as needed
  • Participate in job-related training and seminars
  • Serve on staff committees
  • Provide occasional office assistance
  • Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications & Requirements:
  • Possession of a valid Maryland class A or class B commercial driver's license (CDL) with passenger endorsement and airbrake endorsement, or an equivalent license from another state – copy of current driving record is required at time of interview
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Frederick County Employee Driving Permit
  • Ability to satisfy all Department of Transportation requirements as they apply to periodic physical examinations and licensing standards
  • Ability and willingness to learn First Aid, CPR and other job-related skills, and to maintain current certifications
  • Knowledge of Maryland state and local traffic laws and regulations
  • Knowledge of roads and communities in the Frederick County area, and able to effectively read maps and follow directions
  • Accurate math and clerical skills, with the ability to properly complete mileage and vehicle use reports and other departmental record-keeping
  • Effective spoken and written (English) communication skills, including the ability to effectively use telephone and utilize two-way radio communications in compliance with FCC regulations, ability to accurately follow written and spoken instructions and ability to effectively convey information to passengers
  • Ability and willingness to learn to operate all fleet vehicles
  • Ability and willingness to work in varied driving conditions, as long as the weather has not caused service to be suspended
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public
  • Physical requirements include the ability to assist persons as they board and depart the vehicle, to secure wheelchairs on board, and to perform general vehicle maintenance
  • Driving experience transporting passengers

Additional Information/Examination Process:
  • Available for varied working hours as needed
  • This position is subject to post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return to duty and random drug and alcohol testing
  • This position is considered "essential," therefore, the employee is expected, when directed, to report to work in the event of a weather emergency (or other circumstances) when County offices are closed.
  • Shift premium applies after 5 p.m. (additional $.62 per hour)
  • The grant that funds this position will determine the duration of this position
