The Fleet Performance Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and improving the processes, procedures, and activities required to improve and sustain the operational efficiency of Luminant’s fossil and nuclear generation fleet. This includes thermodynamic efficiency of fossil and nuclear units and boiler efficiencies and emissions optimization of the fossil units. In this role, the incumbent supervises a team of engineers working out of the Power Optimization Center (POC) within the Operations Services organization. This position is responsible for the development and maintenance of the fossil unit performance curves required for efficient dispatch and market operations.

  • Direct the short term and long term activities and resources to effectively deliver efficient unit operation for the fossil and nuclear fleet
  • Develop and maintain on-line models and calculations to identify plant efficiency and performance improvement opportunities
  • Effectively communicate plant performance issues to Luminant Energy to support efficient fleet dispatch and market operations
  • Assist power plant management in the achievement of generation goals through the effective communication of performance improvement opportunities
  • Support the development of business cases for capital improvements and repairs recommended by the POC
  • Develop and maintain the unit performance curves required for efficient unit dispatch
  • Manage multiple task assignments to meet or exceed corporate objectives
  • Provide effective and timely reports associated with remote unit and equipment performance testing
  • Develop and improve department capabilities through talent management and development plans for self and direct reports
  • Actively pursue career development
Minimal background and knowledge requirements:
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, six years of power generation or equivalent energy industry experience, and licensed as a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Texas -- OR -- fifteen years of related industrial experience including progressive responsibility utilizing the responsibilities listed above
  • Experience in maintenance, production, technical, or asset management and knowledge of resources and technologies required to manage the function
  • Works with minimal, broad based, business oriented supervision
  • Creates and sponsors new ideas to improve efficiency
  • Communicates clearly and concisely in written, verbal, and electronic forms
  • Demonstrates knowledge of how assigned workgroup activities impact operation/maintenance of other systems/units; uses this knowledge to maximize productivity/safety, and resolve issues
Preferred background and knowledge requirements:
  • Ten years experience in the operation or support of of major power production equipment and processes
  • Working knowledge of performance testing or monitoring technologies, methodologies, and principles
  • Demonstrated knowledge of fleet level performance monitoring concepts
PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS: This position requires the ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities in the following environment:

  • Occasional long, irregular hours
  • Use of a PC, computer terminal and/or telephone over 2 hours a day
  • Frequent travel to plant sites and industry forums
  • Open workspace office environment
  • The incumbent applies management of performance monitoring and testing practices and principles across the Luminant Fossil Generation fleet, consisting of twelve (12) lignite/coal fired generating units at five (5) plant sites, and multiple gas/oil fired generating units and combustion turbines. The combined net generating capacity of Fossil Generation is in excess of 10,000 MW. Monitoring services, as well as consulting services for performance testing, are also provided to Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant
  • The incumbent supervises 5 corporate based performance engineers and specialists
