Services provided by consultants will include participation in the review and appraisal of submitted papers, and may include involvement in the oversight of peer review and decisions on publication of research articles in collaboration with the journal editors and our editorial board, advice on commissioning and peer review of articles for the journal’s Magazine section in collaboration with journal editors, and possible participation in editorial writing, along with writing of blog entries, press releases, editors’ summaries and other related material.

We are looking for candidates who can provide part time freelance editorial services either as part of a freelance portfolio or while maintaining scientific research responsibilities elsewhere.

This is freelance work, likely to be up to 1-2 days per week. Freelancers are not employed by the Public Library of Science and are expected to work remotely.

Qualifications and Experience: Candidates should usually have a PhD, with several years of relevant post-doctoral experience, and wide biological knowledge, with good contacts in the research community. Applicants with experience in any of the following areas would be particularly welcome: molecular and cellular biology, genetics, neuroscience, microbiology, immunology, ecology and evolution. Applicants should have skill in critically evaluating biological research and be able to prioritize and work efficiently to deadlines. Experience in editorial and peer review processes is ideal but not essential.
