The ideal candidate must be able to design and deliver current course content that reflects a balance between classic thought, contemporary practice and the state of the art in the technology and practices of the jewelry industry. Due to the changing scene of jewelry design, production and trends and the power represented by various social platforms, the applicant should have a working knowledge of web-based jewelry skills and social networking acuity. We are seeking an individual who is able to balance both theory and practical application of jewelry knowledge. The applicant must also be able to adapt, suggest and initiate course curriculum that can be adjusted to changing jewelry industry needs, global and consumer tends while respecting and incorporating local issues and challenges. The ideal candidate is expected to have a proven strong academic record with appropriate national and global industry connections.
In addition to having unquestioned professional ability, the candidate must have a commitment to incorporating their varied professional experiences and practices into curriculum and to sharing their industry contacts and relationships to maintain and expand the global profile of FIT’s Jewelry Design Department. S/he will need to carry out department work in addition to their teaching responsibilities.
• The applicant must possess a 4-year undergraduate degree.
• A minimum of six (6) years of pertinent jewelry industry experience in specific areas such as: fashion jewelry construction and/or design capacity, production management and sourcing of jewelry metals.
• Jewelry-trend forecasting.
• Manufacturing and design experience on a retail level.
• Extensive knowledge of the international jewelry, diamond and precious metals markets.
• Three (3) years as an instructor in an accredited course of studies, or as a lecturer and/or leader of workshops.
Successful candidates will demonstrate abilities in the following areas;
• Knowledge of current computer-aided software applications and programs including, but not limited to: Rhino, Jewel CAD, Matrix, Solidscape, Numeric and similar programs pertinent to the jewelry industry.
• A track record and commitment to maintaining updated technological skills and knowledge.
Instructional Design/Student Development and Success
• An area of specialization in one or more of the following: jewelry industry areas: wholesale, manufacturing, design, retail, gem and diamond market, economic global markets, international trade practices and work force requirements; also, a knowledge and familiarity with the historical aspects of jewelry, both in relationship to styles and individual master jewelers.
• Excellent communicative skills to include demonstrable knowledge and experience in teaching, mediation, seminar and/or symposiums presentations.
• A deep understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of the Jewelry field, as well as a proven record of successfully integrating that knowledge into interdisciplinary courses and curricula.
• The applicant must be able to design and deliver coursework in a manner that links learning objectives across disciplines and reflects how work is performed currently in the jewelry industry and is able to demonstrably show integration of course concepts with related curricula, disciplines and professional practice.
• The ability to incorporate a variety of instructional delivery methods including the use of demonstrations and specific project assignments.
• A continued focus on creative and scholarly work specific to the discipline.
• Possess a thorough knowledge of sustainable and safe products, current equipment, and methodologies.
• Be a team-player and self-motivated.
• Possess the ability to organize and lead committees, take on special initiatives both for the college and the department.
• Ability to adapt, suggests, and initiate course curriculum that responds to changing jewelry industry needs and global trends, and respects and incorporates local issues and challenges.
• Demonstrated ability to work within, support and maintain productive relationships in multicultural environments, and model inclusive behaviors for students.
• Awareness of global and local challenges related to the triple bottom line of sustainable practice that is environmentally, socially, and fiscally responsible.
