Responsibilities
Job Summary:
Coordinates genetic testing process with laboratory, physicians and patients/families. This includes monitoring genetic test requests, obtaining DNA testing consent forms, calling laboratory results and counseling of patients and/or families. Participates in cancer tumor boards, acts as genetic information resource for physicians and assists MD geneticist as needed.
SERVES AS LIAISON BETWEEN LABORATORY, PHYSICIAN AND PATIENT.
*Aids physicians in decision-making regarding DNA testing of patients.
*Determines the best laboratory to perform DNA for a particular disease entity and work with reference lab to establish test information.
*Provides results of DNA testing to physician with appropriate explanations and detection rates.
*Obtains informed consent from patients wanting DNA testing after appropriate counseling is performed.
*Presents case histories in an accurate and concise manner.
AIDS Ph.D. AND MEDICAL GENETICIST IN COUNSELING OF PATIENTS.
*Performs chart reviews for schedule genetic patients in OB/GYN.
*Aids in genetic counseling of cancer patients with positive family histories.
*Aids in counseling patients with adult onset genetic diseases.
*Works directly with and reports to PhD geneticist and molecular pathologist in distributing workload and coordinating activities.
*Provides prenatal genetic counseling and teratogen counseling to patients in OB/GYN.
ELICITS AND INTERPRETS GENETIC HISTORIES.
*Interprets individual and family medical histories.
*Interprets individual and family reproductive histories.
*Determines mode of inheritance and risk of occurrence of recurrence of genetic disease entitities.
*Accurately interprets a teratogenic history.
ACTS AS PATIENT ADVOCATE.
*Promotes informed decision-making regarding genetic testing through counseling.
*Aids families by providing suggestions for communicating genetic information to other family members and obtain appropriate medical records for adequate diagnosis.
*Provides information regarding etiology, natural history and management of genetic disorders.
*Provides patient support information and written information regarding specific genetic diseases to patients.
MAINTAINS PROFESSIONAL GROWTH.
*Participates in teaching conferences and teaching of residents, medical students, other health professional and students as needed.
*Attends tumor boards as assigned and cytogenetic journal clubs.
MAINTAINS EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION WITH SUPERVISING GENETIC STAFF AND OTHER PATIENT CARE GIVERS.
*Communicates in a clear and concise manner any information that may influence the patient's treatment program or well-being.
*Dictates or records complete and accurate information in patient charts.
*Performs other duties as required by Genetic, Molecular Medicine and OB/GYN.
PERFORMS OTHER POSITION APPROPRIATE DUTIES AS REQUIRED IN A COMPETENT, PROFESSIONAL AND COURTEOUS MANNER.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITY:
*A Doctorate degree (e.g. Ph.D., Ed D, JD, PharmD) is preferred.
*Board certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling or American College of Medical Genetics preferred.
*Three to five years experience preferred.
*Shows sensitivity to cultural differences and psychosocial issues that patients with genetic disorder(s) face.
*Recognizes own limitations in knowledge and capabilities and seeks appropriate consultation.
