Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes (CSAV), located at the United States Geological Survey (USGS), Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.


DUTIES: Works with observatory scientists to program new content and develop/refine tools for the observatory’s websites. Develops java programs that automatically ingest observatory data sets into MySQL databases. Develops routines for plotting new datasets within existing java/JSP software that allows interactive visualization of observatory data through a web-based interface (VALVE). Installs and troubleshoots new versions of VALVE and associated web server software. Modifies VALVE code to provide enhancements and bug fixes. Refines and/or establishes MySQL database structures. Refines and/or develops web-based interfaces for databases. Assists in the administration of Linux servers. Backs up databases, critical software, and files. Develops data downloading software with Linux shell scripts.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Computer or Physical Sciences (Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college and one (1) year of work experience in computer programming will substitute for a Bachelor’s Degree). EXPERIENCE: At least one (1) year of experience in software code development either in an academic setting or in prior work experience. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Strong knowledge of Linux and Linux shell scripting, and of Java or C, and of languages used in web-based programming (e.g. PHP, JSP). Must possess a valid driver’s license to operate a government vehicle. Must be able to perform occasional field work testing/installing/troubleshooting field instruments as needed.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of MySQL, Matlab. Experience collecting, analyzing, and archiving scientific data. Experience in web server administration.
