Global Service Learning (GSL) Assistant Leader, China

Summer 2013 Career Opportunity

Lakeside School, an independent coeducational day school located in North Seattle is currently recruiting for a Global Service Learning (GSL) Assistant Leader for a trip to China that will take place in June and July 2013. Lakeside’s Upper School GSL program combines a seven day on-campus pre-trip curriculum program with four weeks of on-site service learning with cultural immersion in mostly rural areas in the developing and near-developing world. The on-site service learning typically occurs mid-June to late July.

Responsibilities

GSL project leaders report to Lakeside’s Associate Director of Global Programs. Responsibilities include planning, organizing, managing, and executing all aspects of the assigned project (before, during and after travel to the host country), and for successfully delegating tasks to assistant project leaders. Core responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Attending required pre and post trip meetings;

Travel with students and other leaders to, within, and from the project site (required);

Facilitating informational and curricular meetings and communications with selected student participants and their families;

Participating in a leader training overnight weekend retreat (required);

Overseeing all aspects of the on-site program (travel, home-stay arrangements and adjustment), curriculum, language training, service working with the partner organization, health and safety of students, planning and overseeing daily reflection and curriculum meetings;

Evaluating the project, submitting written comments on students, and turning in all receipts and budget report within two weeks of return.

Assistant Leaders not residing in the Seattle area will have modified responsibilities and a decreased stipend.

Requirements and Qualifications

Qualified candidates will have experience in leading groups overseas and fluency in Mandarin. Time spent in rural areas in the developing world is preferred. Training and/or experience in experiential and/or outdoor education is desirable. A hardy constitution is important and references should speak to the candidate’s integrity, flexibility, and ability to be an effective member of a team. Leaders must be available April 26-27, 2013 for leader training (travel to Seattle will be provided at Lakeside’s expense). All candidates must have a college degree. Required Wilderness First Aid/CPR certification will be covered at Lakeside’s expense if needed. Assistant Leaders must undergo a background check, possess a valid driver’s license and meet the requirements for renting a vehicle (currently 25 years old).

Compensation and Benefits

Lakeside School is committed to attracting and retaining outstanding employees by providing a competitive compensation package. Individuals will receive a stipend that is based on their completion of required pre and post meetings, training sessions and the assigned trip. Travel reimbursement will be limited and established prior to position appointment.
