Graphic Designer/GUI (Graphical User Interface) Designer The Graphic Designer will work with technical mapping and GIS experts who use geospatial data to portray information about natural resources (forestry, wildlife management, hydrology, etc.) in a nontechnical way. The ability to simplify technical information is an important aspect of the position. Graphically portrayed information typically includes geographic or spatial data sources, thematic maps, graphs, pie charts, tables, and others. The successful candidate will be responsible for all aspects of web design, including project storyboards, interface design, web graphics creation/optimization, and web usability. The candidate must have experience working in a collaborative environment with project managers and web developers to design and build web applications. The successful candidate will need to take verbal and written requests and translate them into creative, well-designed products. The position requires creating and implementing web site style guides and templates to ensure consistency with web design standards. Other tasks include the design of posters, web banners, ads, online demos and other marketing materials. Occasional assistance with project documentation and the presentation of storyboard content will be required, so excellent written and oral communication skills are necessary. GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and cartographic experience is useful but not required. Duties Include:
Graphic Design of multi-media products for print, web and desktop.
User interface design and integration for desktop and web based products.
Communication with client and project team to facilitate design that meets project objectives.
Work with development team to design, create and integrate map interface components for interactive web based maps.
Defines user interface (UI) development efforts, participates in strategy/requirement meetings, acting as an advocate for user-centered design to ensure usable web applications.
Plans and assists determination of information architecture, taxonomy, and nomenclature. Builds prototypes to assist development and marketing teams in new initiatives.
Maintains development methodologies, and branding considerations, especially related to CSS, and compatibility issues.
Implements and codes the user interface design directly and/or with guidance from project teams. The Graphic Designer/GUI Designer shall possess the following REQUIRED qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Graphic Design, Information Technology or related field and at least 5-7 years design experience, including 3 years experience in web design and HMTL coding and including experience in usability analysis or UI design for web based applications
Complete understanding of graphics production for the web, graphic optimization, scripting, page building; experience in building large scale websites
Demonstrable experience with visual HTML tools such as Dreamweaver
Must be able to design and build fully-functional web prototypes
Expert knowledge of Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) design/coding and issues related to browser and platform differences
Effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills with experience writing requirements or other project documentation for web teams
Exceptional listening skills
Experience working with multidisciplinary teams
Must be detail oriented, actively seeks to employ new technology, creative problem solver, ability to take direction and handle multiple projects as needed
Familiarity with implementing usability concepts, and usability testing methodologies
Working knowledge of Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Creative Suite, Photoshop CS, and Illustrator CS, Microsoft PowerPoint, Macromedia Dreamweaver, Macromedia Fireworks, and Flash. The Graphic Designer/GUI Designer shall have a majority of the following CORE qualifications:
Past experience and proven track record with web-based GUI development
Scripting language skills PHP and LAMP systems
Good knowledge of Drupal The following are DESIRED qualifications that will improve a Graphic Designer/GUI Designer qualification score:
GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and cartographic experience
Understanding of OOD and OOP
Demonstrable self-motivation with the ability to drive features to delivery
Demonstrated ability as a quick learner able to research, learn, and adapt new and emerging technologies
