Groundskeeper I

Works under general supervision with moderate latitude and independent judgment. Maintain grounds with both rotary and riding lawn equipment, electric edger, and various hand tools. Performs other duties as assigned and will be scheduled to work weekends and holidays depending on needs of the department for callout. Works under the supervision of the groundskeeper supervisor.

Essential Job Functions:
Works under general supervision with moderate latitude and independent judgment. Maintain grounds with both rotary and riding lawn equipment, electric edger, and various hand tools.(65%) Performs other duties as assigned and will be scheduled to work weekends and holidays depending on needs of the department for callout.(2%) Plant trees and maintain flower beds on campus. ( 10%) Make repairs to campus grounds. ( 8%) Remove trash, debris, rubbish.( 8% ) Maintain pest control for ants, flying insects, bugs and other various pest campus wide. ( 5% ) Maintain and operate equipment for cemetery purposes. ( 2% )

Knowledge Skills Abilities:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of eight grade, plus six (6) months of experience in maintenance and repairs of buildings and grounds keeping. Knowledge, skill and ability to use lawn / garden / farm tools and equipment. Knowledge, skill and ability to use a variety of hand and power tools (construction / repair). Knowledge, skill and ability associated with the care and management of livestock and wildlife. Must be able to meet San Angelo State School driver requirements. Demonstrate knowledge of English language including vocabulary, grammar, and organization of expression for documentation purposes. Ability to read, understand, and apply a variety of inter-related instructions such as those found in guidelines, regulations and policies. Ability to perform basic mathematical computations. Ability to communicate effectively.

Registration or Licensure Requirements:
May be required to obtain a pesticide applicators license for pest control. May be required to show proof of previous grounds keeping experience.

Initial Selection Criteria:
Skilled in the use of materials, tools and grounds keeping equipment. The Groundskeeper I performs moderate-skilled maintenance in caring for grounds, cemeteries, etc. and/or work in repairing and maintaining state building sites and equipment at San Angelo State SLC campus. The Groundskeeper I may perform duties in various maintenance controlled departments as needed for relief purposes and will include some weekend, after hour callout, and shift work as needed. The Groundskeeper I works under the general supervision of the department Team Leader and/or the Maintenance & Operations Supervisor III. Completion of work requires use of established methods and/or techniques and decisions are varied but based on well-defined guidelines. The Groundskeeper I has no financial responsibility, but is accountable for assigned property.
