Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Islands Ecosystem Center’s Kilauea Field Station, Hawaii Cooperative Studies Unit (HCSU), located in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.


DUTIES: Assists Project Leader in investigating the ecology, impacts, and control of vector-transmitted avian disease in the Pacific Basin. Duties include, but are not limited to: use of commercial kits to extract DNA from frozen blood and mosquito samples, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) analysis of extracted DNA to diagnose hematozoan infections, preparation of PCR products for sequencing, PCR analysis of mosquito samples to detect and characterize genetic diversity of Wolbachia endosymbionts, use of light microscopes to diagnose infections with avian blood parasites from stained blood smears, serological analysis of plasma samples to detect antibodies to avian malaria, and maintenance and summarization of laboratory data for preparation of reports.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college. EXPERIENCE: At least one (1) year of experience in a research laboratory. Experience with basic spreadsheet and database programs. Experience using micropipetters for accurate measurement of small volumes. Experience using sterile techniques. Familiarity with compound microscopes, PCR, ELISA and Western Blotting protocols. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Knowledge of desktop computer operation and safe operation of routine laboratory instruments. Ability to follow detailed protocols for preparing chemical reagents and running PCR and serological tests. Ability to safely handle chemical reagents. Ability to use compound microscopes. Ability to perform accurate data entry and management. Must possess a valid driver’s license.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Biology, Zoology, or Chemistry and at least one (1) additional year of experience in a research laboratory in one (1) or more of the following areas: Ecology, Conservation Biology, Chemistry, Toxicology, Microbiology, Hematology, Clinical Chemistry, Molecular Biology, Genetics or Parasitology. At least one (1) year of experience extracting DNA from tissue samples and setting up and running PCR reactions. At least one (1) year of experience following complicated and detailed field or laboratory protocols. Documented ability to multitask.
