As a Senior Recreation Leader this position requires an ability to perform a full range of duties as assigned, working independently and exercising judgment and initiative. Senior Recreation Leaders receive instruction and/or assistance during the day from the Recreation Supervisor. Senior Recreation Leaders are able to adjust when new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work. Independent judgment is required to identify, select, and apply the most appropriate of available guidelines and procedures, interpret precedents, and adopt standard methods or practices to meet variations in facts and/or conditions. They must have the ability to lead a staff and oversee the day-to-day operations. Senior Recreation Leaders are required to have prior related experience that allows the employee to meet the qualification standards.
This individual will be assigned to work as a camp coordinator at one of the following programs Pee Wee, Kidz, Explorer, or the CIT Camp and will work under the supervision of the Recreation Supervisor. Carlsbad Traditional Camps are all day programs serving 15 to 80 children depending on the program. These camps focus on summer fun including sports, arts & crafts, teambuilding activities, and field trips. This position will be responsible for all operations at each camp. These programs run Monday through Friday during the months of June 17th through August 23th of 2013. This position will require up to 450 hours of work, program hours range between 7am and 6pm. Position will average between 30-35 hours per week, depending on field trip locations. Mandatory Staff Training Days: June 8th and 9th, 2013 (8:00-5:00). Additional training will be required if needed. *Senior Recreation Leader is an hourly part-time position.
Daily responsibilities of a Senior Recreation Leader include directing and supervising participants of the program; maintaining records pertinent to the program; directing staff on daily responsibilities implementing age appropriate activities and events including field trips; ensuring the health, welfare, and safety of the programs participants; working closely with the Recreation Supervisor and Recreation Leaders to ensure the success of the program through preparation, execution and evaluation of the program; assisting other staff in organizing and cleaning facility areas and equipment; establishing and maintaining relationships with parents, community center staff and other key individuals; and maintaining a fun and positive attitude daily to create a happy environment for participants. Periodic responsibilities include attending monthly staff meetings as well as other meetings and trainings pertinent to program areas; supervising participants during scheduled field trips, and other duties assigned.
Knowledge of youth and camp programs; possess excellent customer service and communication skills; demonstrate exceptional attention to detail; demonstrate ability to provide the necessary support to ensure the health and well-being of all participants and staff; must be able to take direction as well as have the ability to take initiative; establish and maintain cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; requires a flexible work schedule that may require morning and evening hours; understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to evaluate emergency situations and act decisively and effectively to resolve them; communicate clearly, concisely, both orally and in writing; must be able to lift a minimum of 25lbs.; may be required to use personal vehicle during assigned shifts.
Experience & Education:
Education – Must have high school diploma or G.E.D.
Experience – One year experience and/or training performing duties comparable to a Senior Recreation Leader, preferably supplemented by college level courses in recreation, education, physical education, or related field. Experience working directly with youth and a reporting staff is required.
Special Requirements/License or Certificate
· Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class C California Driver’s License
· Possession of, or ability to obtain, CPR and first aid certification
· Must have at least one years of experience working in a youth oriented program
· Must have experience leading a team of staff
· Must have had experience working with the public and children
· Must be able to effectively communicate with youth ages 3-15 year old.
· Must be available to work flexible schedule, as well as mornings, afternoons, required to attend mandatory meeting/training sessions; must provide own transportation.
· Must meet state of California tuberculosis test requirements
· Must be 20 years of age or older
· Person hired must wear standard apparel as prescribed by the Recreation Department
Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, reach, and lift 25lbs. +; exposure to outdoors; ability to travel to different sites and locations.
Part-time (hourly) position with pay rate of $12 per hour.
This is a non-benefitted position.
* Part-time employee cannot exceed 1,000 total hours worked within one fiscal year.
