The Environmental Health Services Division is seeking to fill two (2) Term-Limited Temporary Health & Environmental Investigator I or II (depending on qualifications) positions to provide education, inspection, and compliance services to a broad variety of food establishments, schools, and water recreation facilities to minimize the risk of injury and disease. The HE & I I and II will enable businesses and schools to protect public health and comply with the Codes of the King County Board of Health by conducting routine inspections, educational visits and other investigations at food establishments, schools, pools, and spas in King County. Additionally the Health & Environmental Investigator I and II will implement program activities and priorities outlined by the King County Equity and Social Justice Ordinance and the King County Strategic.
These term-limited temporary positions are benefits eligible and are anticipated to last up to 6 months to one year.

Work Schedule: This position typically works 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week anytime between 8:00a.m. to 6:00p.m. Schedule requires flexibility for weekend and evening work. This position is subject to the Fair Labor Standards Act and is overtime eligible.

Examples of Duties:
• Provide culturally competent education, technical assistance, and regulatory compliance advice to food industries, water recreation facilities, the media, and the general public.
• Convey and interpret public health and environmental codes, regulations, policies, and technical regulatory information to a variety of diverse audiences.
• Conduct inspections of food establishments (permanent and temporary), pools, schools, and beaches to ensure compliance with current public health and environmental codes, regulations and policies.
• Determine if regulatory violations have occurred, document violations, and establish schedule for corrections; and make recommendations for follow-up to senior investigators based upon investigation findings.
• Perform food borne illness investigations and coordinate activities with senior level investigators to initiate enforcement or corrective actions as required.
• Respond to public complaints and inquires on food borne illness and environmental health matters.
• Maintain and use program based computerized systems, write reports, and maintain accurate field records.
• Work with other agencies and jurisdictions to receive, screen, or share information regarding the environmental health.
• Present basic environmental health program information at meetings and public forums.
• Participate in assigned Environmental Health Division meetings and trainings.
• Registered Sanitarian certificate from the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) or the Washington State Environmental Health Association (WSBRS) is required at the time of hire into the Health and Environmental Investigator II positions. For the Health and Environmental Investigator I position, obtaining certification as a Registered Sanitarian is required within one year of hire.
• Demonstrated knowledge of federal, state, and local industry codes, regulations, policies and procedures relating to environmental health and protection; environmental sciences and engineering principles; public health principles and disease process; and disease prevention principles.
• Demonstrated knowledge of water and food sampling techniques; sample handling procedures and protocol; data collection, analysis, and interpretation and safety procedures for handling hazardous materials.
• Demonstrated knowledge of regulatory and technical research methods;
• Demonstrated knowledge of conflict resolution techniques.
• Demonstrated ability to conduct complex environmental health investigation using established regulations, codes, and practices; to research, monitor, and apply federal, state and local laws, policies, and environmental protection.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
• Knowledge of environmental sciences and environmental engineering principles.
• Knowledge of environmental protection programs, laws, regulations and policy processes.
• Knowledge of data collection, analysis and interpretation techniques.
• Knowledge of federal, Washington state and local environmental regulations
• Knowledge of regulatory and technical research methods.
• Skill in synthesizing a variety of information and in assessing organizational and political impact.
• Skill in identifying and using alternative resources.
• Skill in balancing regulations with individual situations.
