Job Description:
Oakton has an opening beginning with the Spring 2014 semester for Humanities faculty to teach Western Culture and the Arts: Beginnings through the Middle Ages, Introduction to Art, and World Mythologies. Western Culture and the Arts: Beginnings through the Middle Ages surveys the cultural accomplishments of Western civilization from its beginnings in Mesopotamia through the Middle Ages. Content includes visual arts, music, literature, theater, architecture, and philosophy studied in historical context.

Introduction to Art provides a survey of the visual arts (painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture and architecture) emphasizing how art transmits cultural traditions and aesthetic values. Content includes the historical, social and technological factors that contribute to understanding the function and meaning of works of art.

World Mythologies explores the nature of mythology. Content includes themes, archetypical figures and situations, symbolism, and figurative language found in selected folklore and legendary narratives.

Part-time faculty are paid on a lecture hour equivalents (LHE) basis. For most courses, the LHE is the same as a credit hour. For others, the LHE represents additional work for teaching the class, such as grading papers for Composition classes or teaching a class with a laboratory section (computers, languages, and the sciences); in those cases, the LHE represents a figure higher than the credit hour. All part-time faculty start at the beginning pay rates, regardless of the level and type of experience obtained elsewhere. Those rates are $963/LHE for faculty without doctorates and $1013/LHE for faculty with doctorates for the 2013-14 academic year.

Part-time faculty advance one step within the salary schedule with the successful completion of 2 fall & spring semesters where 3+ credit hours are taught in each semester.

Requirements:
A MA degree in an appropriate humanities discipline for the course assigned is required.

Prior college teaching experience is preferred.
