Position: Hydrogen Plant Operator
Reporting Relationships: Reports to the Plant Manager.
Responsible for planning and carrying out onsite activities related to the pre-commissioning, commissioning and start-up of new hydrogen plants to ensure safe and timely start-ups. Review plant installation, punch list prior to start-up, assist in developing and writing plant routine as well as start-up, shut-down, and emergency actions procedures. Be part of the commissioning and start-up team and thereafter, perform normal plant operator duties.
Plant operators perform start-up and shut-down activities as well as Preventative and Corrective Maintenance. Interface through electronic, pneumatic and/or mechanical systems to control the steam reformer based hydrogen plant with hydrogne separation unit to meet the expectations of our pipeline and merchant customers. Maximize efficiencies, minimize down time and ensure integrity of stored and shipped products. Accept responsibility to be proactive and innovative in solutions to ensure an efficient operation and safe work environment. Plant operators work rotating shift work as required by the plant manager
Plan, coordinate and execute commissioning and start-up activities. Assist / carry out the development of commissioning and start-up plans and schedules.
Organize, plan and prioritize routine operations duties.
Support construction planning to allow quick and efficient commissioning of equipment and systems.
Coordinate and supervise on-site visits from equipment vendors.
Assist and coordinate as requested plant performance tests with plant supplier / customer.
Plan and carry out commissioning and plant start-up with plant supplier.
Provide input to resolution of issues such as conflicting design requirements, suitability of materials and similar.
Ensure documentation of commissioning and start-up procedures is completed.
Adherence to process safety standards and regulations, and ensures that projects are executed with compliance.
Participate in process and plant design safety reviews, Pre-start Safety Reviews, Critical Safety System Checklist, and Operating Procedure Development.
Participate in scheduled and unscheduled plant shutdowns of hydrogen plants.
Support the development of standards and operating procedures. Evaluate and implement step changes to the work process. Identify and share best practices and actively participate in the process of sharing lessons learned.
Additional Position Accountabilities
Adjust plant control variables, monitor and manage process equipment parameters to meet production goals.
Obtain knowledge base of the theory of air separation and related equipment associated with the process; understand the plant's water chemistry to assure proper cooling tower operations and equipment functioning.
Develop skills to trouble shoot, evaluate process upsets and take corrective actions.
Develop ability to interpret Process & Instrument Drawings to understand process operations, equipment and aid in trouble shooting system anomalies.
Participate in the maintenance/updating of work instructions to assure accurate and current start-up and operational procedures.
Demonstrate mechanical aptitude, evaluate equipment performance, perform routine calibration and maintenance of analytical test equipment and maintain appropriate records.
Be safety conscious, i.e., meetings, work areas, eliminate hazards, etc.
Ability to prepare and maintain production operations and distribution records to meet the requirements of FDA, DPA, OSHA, ISO Quality Systems and other internal and external requirements.
Participate in the maintenance and updating of plant and equipment work instructions.
Prepare and maintain production operations and distribution records as required.
Prepare QA documents to certify product quality.
Good communication skills (inter departmental, team members, vendors, etc.
Responsible for reviewing and releasing medical grade product per FDA regulations.
Troubleshooting plant operational issues and alarms, either directly or in conjunction with the local team.
Assisting with start/stopp of plant in a safe manner as dictated by operating conditions and business needs.
Optimizing plant performance by tracking performance data and implement the best operating plan.
Executing productivity ideas and Best Practices to keep plant costs down.
Interacting closely with all the supporting groups/personnel for performance optimization and troubleshooting.
This position requires minimal travel.
A high school degree is required, with field operation or plant commissioning and start-up experience a must. The successful candidate will have process plant experience, preferably in the industrial gas, petrochemical or power industry, with a minimum of 5+ years experience. Experience with steam methane reforming is a plus. Experience with hydrogen pressure swing adsorption units is a plus. This position also requires familiarity with instrumentation and the use of distributive control systems.

Understanding of Analytical principles.
