University Relations is looking for a Director of Communications to develop and write complex, significant feature and other stories about the University of Florida and its research, programs, faculty members and students that support and provide context to university-wide initiatives and goals. The incumbent will develop comprehensive communications plans integrating conventional and new media strategies and will place stories in major market publications. They will assist with strategic communications regarding issues which may affect the image and perception of the University.

Specific functions include:
40% — Research, develop and write complex feature and other stories about the University of Florida and its research, programs, faculty members and students that support and provide context to university-wide initiatives and goals.

15% — Develop comprehensive communications plans integrating conventional and new media strategies to optimize story placement, particularly in major media markets.

10% — Build relationships with communications professionals nationwide, researchers and university leadership to understand campus-wide and college goals and initiatives.

10% — Monitor and analyze developments in higher education and major issues of the day to develop story ideas.

15% — Produce high quality communication vehicles as directed to clearly articulate the university position and priorities. This may include but is not limited to legislative briefings, speeches, position papers, website language, and outreach materials.

10% — Seek to improve teamwork, morale and productivity through better understanding of organizational strategy and individual roles relative to issues’ effect on goals.

Minimum Requirements:
Master’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization; or a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of appropriate experience.
