IT Internship/Co-op Summer 2014 (Cape Canaveral)
Build, manage and support a rapidly-growing, mission-critical, IT environment including: Arista, Cisco, Linux, Solaris, VMWare, and Windows.
Work closely with the launch, mission, and technology engineering teams to ensure customer satisfaction is high.
Provide after-hours or weekend support when necessary to perform high-risk or planned downtime of SpaceX IT systems for upgrades and maintenance.
Install new/rebuild existing servers and configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage, etc. in accordance with published standards and project requirements.
Implement and maintain site-wide network infrastructure for high performance applications and content streaming.
Apply OS patches and upgrades on a regular basis, and upgrade administrative tools and utilities.
Install and configure servers, network equipment, telephone devices, and other IT datacenter systems.
Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as nightly backups.
Research and recommend innovative approaches for system administration tasks.
Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required.
Repair and recover from hardware or software failures.
Work directly with engineers and management to ensure IT systems are maintained and upgraded appropriately, ensuring their availability for all launch and mission-related activities.
Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment.
Students majoring in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering or Information Technology who are available to work at our launch facility in Cape Canaveral, FL full-time for the Summer 2014 semester.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
Keen interest in server hardware, management software, storage technologies, and networking required.
Experience with apache, nginx, bash, PHP, and Python preferred.
High-level of familiarity with the Linux or Windows command line and scripting.
Must be able to troubleshoot computer hardware, software, and IP networks.
Ability to troubleshoot computer hardware, printers, and software.
Must be comfortable working with mission critical and sensitive systems, with a sense of urgency appropriate to the responsibilities of the position.
Ability to address and resolve information technology issues promptly, effectively and independently.
Ability to understand highly technical concepts and communicate them to others in non-technical terms.
Light travel is required for operational and training purposes.
Must be physically fit enough to regularly lift up to 50 lbs. for duties such as UPS battery replacement, unpacking and rack-mounting equipment, or moving large equipment racks.
A highly motivated, positive attitude.
Acute attention to detail.
