Director of Information Technology

Position Summary

The Director of Information Technology provides overall leadership and directs technology efforts to ensure continuous development and execution of technical strategies that enable New England Controls to provide employees and customers with world-class service and maintain a position as a technically innovative organization. The Director provides vision and leadership for developing and implementing information technology initiatives, as well as, supports these initiatives in a HANDS-ON manner. The Director supports business operations in order to improve cost effectiveness and service quality within the operations and focus areas of the company. The Director is responsible for all aspects of the organization’s information technology and systems to provide communications to management, monitor progress and manage risk.

The ideal candidate will have had hands-on experience with progressively increasing responsibilities and leadership within all of the following areas: enterprise application and data base development, data management and data services infrastructures, server and network infrastructure, security administration, website/intranet development, application/customer support. The ideal candidate will also have strong project management skills and be able to lead and mentor small teams to deliver high-quality results with the absolute highest levels of customer service.

Develop and manage all of the internal business system reports to senior management and other users as required. Schedule regular technical support visits to remote locations. Cooperate with managers, peers, and others to uphold NEC’s Total Customer Commitment.

Principal Responsibilities

Leads IT strategic and operational plans to achieve business goals by fostering innovation, prioritizing IT initiatives and coordinating the evaluation, deployment and management of current and future IT system across the organization.
Develops and maintains an appropriate IT organizational structure that supports the needs of the business. Monitoring and implementing security and disaster recovery planning.
Supporting IT aspects of consulting engagements and client projects as needed. Participate in the development and marketing of new business and offerings in data services and predictive analytical services (non-actuarial).
Establishes IT departmental goals, objectives and operating procedures consistent with the Strategic Plan including Core Values.
Meet with the NEC Mgmnt to “translate, communicate and educate”. Translate IT language, communicate IT plans/benefits and explain the potential outcomes. Participate in the strategic planning process, growth and acquisit ion planning.
Acts as an advocate for the organization’s IT vision via regular written and in-person communications with the Principals, Consultants, Managers, and end users.
Identifies opportunities for the appropriate and cost-effective investment of financial resources in IT systems and resources, including staffing, sourcing, purchasing and in-house development.
Develops, tracks and controls the information technology annual operating and capital budgets.
Ensures continuous delivery of IT services through oversight of service level agreements with end users and monitoring of IT systems performance.
Reviews hardware and software acquisition and maintenance contracts.
Keeps current with trends and issues in the IT industry, including current technologies and prices. Advises, counsels, and educates NEC mgmt. on their competitive and financial impact.
Promotes and oversees strategic relationships between internal IT resources and external entities, including vendors and partner organizations. Provide presentations and written reports internally and externally as required.
Supervises recruitment, development, retention and organization of all IT staff in accordance with corporate budgetary objectives and personnel policies. Fosters participation in community and professional events.
Provides support to the marketing, research, client relations and development functions to ensure seamless integration into the IT/business framework of the organization.

  • Maintains extreme confidentiality and discretion at all times. Maintains an appropriate filing system for all confidential materials.
Skills and Expectations

  • Responsible for both Mansfield, MA, Bangor, ME locations, and POND Technical Sales, Cromwell, CT
  • Available and on-site during normal business hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with regular and punctual attendance.
  • Available off-hours for scheduled maintenance and project activities and for emergencies.
  • Able to listen and communicate effectively - verbally and in writing - with customers, team members, and company managers.
  • Able to remain calm and professional under stress.
  • Possess and demonstrate effective time management, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Possess a strong attention to detail with the ability to see the big picture.
Education and experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree and/or 8 years’ experience in related technologies.
Five years’ experience managing and/or directing an IT operation.
Good knowledge of business processes, management, budgeting and business office operations.
Substantial exposure to data processing, hardware platforms, enterprise software applications and outsourced systems.
Good understanding of computer systems characteristics, features and integration capabilities.
One or more advanced technology certificates desirable (MCSE, CISSP, CCNP).
Proven ability in IT planning, organization and development.
Demonstrated ability to apply IT in solving business problems.
Excellent written and oral communication skills including excellent interpersonal skills.
Ability to present ideas in a business-friendly and user-friendly language.
Exceptionally self-motivated and directed. Ability to motivate in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
Flexible work habits. Must be able to change priorities at a moment’s notice. Willing to work extended hours if needed.
Experience with Microsoft Windows; Microsoft Products.

  • Familiar with MS SQL Server installation, management, and administration.
  • Strong skills using MS and other office automation and project management tools and techniques.
