Responsible for performing numerous daily weld inspections, documenting results and working directly with Team Members and Supervision in implementing corrective action and Process Improvement. Performs inbound, in-process and final inspections for rail car welding repairs and maintenance work, incoming material and completes appropriate documentation. Maintains current knowledge of government, industry, customer and company standards, procedures, policy/rules. Duties include preparing detailed tank and freight car repair estimates & work orders, report preparation, in-process & final inspection processes. Ideal background: minimum 2+ years tank car inspector experience, proven mechanical aptitude, working knowledge of industry regulations, ability to interpret drawings, procedural manuals, weld symbols & gauges - and strong computer and math skills, as well as effective written and verbal communication abilities. NDE RVI, PT & MT certifications a plus. No supervisory responsibilities. Assures Inspection and Test Plans (shop write-ups) address the reason that the car was shopped, reflects car condition, is complete and accurate in respect to content, estimating and pricing, with references to procedures and contain Hold Points as necessary to assure work does not progress to the next stage until the appropriate quality checks/in-process inspections are made; are assembled in a complete, logical and understandable manner for shop personnel to follow to meet the workmanship, and quality standards established by government, company and customer specifications; participates in nonconformance root cause investigations, corrective action and monitoring the adequacy of same in their area of responsibility and makes efforts for continuous improvement of quality and the elimination of nonconformances; ability to read prints including weld symbols and understand specification requirements. Successfully pass rail car repair car specific training/testing appropriate for the position and welding inspection training/testing. Be familiar with NDE requirements and procedures applicable to the repair and testing of rail cars and their components. Be able to make logical decisions and associations, show initiative and be a productive self starter with minimal supervision.
Employees selected to perform any special processes will be trained, tested and qualified under programs designed for the particular process.
WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Currently possess or be able to become a Certified Welding Inspector within approximately thirty-days of hire. Currently possess or obtain Dye Penetrate Certification within approximately thirty days of hire. A minimum of 3 years experience working with repair processes. NDE and welding inspection.
A minimum of high school education. Advantageous to have supplemental training in the way of classes or seminars related to rail car component repair and maintenance. Other specific training may be required based on specific duties.
