The College of Architecture, Design, and the Arts at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) invites applicants for the full-time positions of Associate Instructional Laboratory Specialist and Instructional Laboratory Specialist in the Project Lab, used for wood and metal model making, and physical and digital prototyping. Responsible for managing laboratory set-up, support, and maintenance, and assisting in the development of Project Lab policies and procedures.

Duties:
1) Associate Instructional Laboratory Specialist
Essential duties and responsibilities include:
  • Recommend, implement, and oversee the setup of students’ laboratory tests and experiments.
  • Instruct and supervise students in use of specialized equipment; train faculty and students on proper procedures and lab safety.
  • Design, develop, construct, and demonstrate equipment needed.
  • Assist in updating laboratory manuals based on curriculum requirements.
  • Evaluate laboratory equipment, examine and document performance. Manage laboratory budget.
Bachelor’s degree (masters preferred) in relevant lab area plus one (1) year experience in a visual arts laboratory setting required, including specialized knowledge and expert-level skills with art, design, and architecture materials and equipment. Knowledge of laboratory safety and mechanical and technical troubleshooting skills required. Experience in an academic institution and teaching experience preferred.

2) Instructional Laboratory Specialist

Essential duties and responsibilities include:

  • Instruct and supervise students in use of specialized equipment; train faculty and students on proper procedures and lab safety.
  • Design, develop, construct, and demonstrate equipment needed.
  • Assist in updating laboratory manuals based on curriculum requirements.
  • Evaluate laboratory equipment, examine and document performance. Manage laboratory budget.
Advise and assist in the development and execution of capital improvement projects involving the College labs and instructional facilities.

Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree (masters preferred) in relevant lab area plus two (2) years experience in a visual arts laboratory setting required, including specialized knowledge and expert-level skills with art, design, and architecture materials and equipment. Knowledge of laboratory safety and mechanical and technical troubleshooting skills required. Experience in an academic institution and teaching experience preferred.
