  • Job Summary: This position will support LLUMC’s strategic plan and the organization’s mission to continue the teaching and healing ministry of Jesus Christ, while embracing the core values of Compassion, Integrity, Excellence, Teamwork, and Wholeness. The Medical Interpreter/Translator provides competent and culturally sensitive Spanish in-person, telephone, and video-remote interpretation for patients and their families/caregivers with Limited English Proficiency (LEP). Serves all sites licensed under Loma Linda University Medical Center (LLUMC) license. Maintains working knowledge of all applicable state and federal regulations and organizational policies related to LEP. Documents interpretation in medical record according to established guidelines. Adheres to the Code of Professional Ethics and Standards of Practice developed by the California Healthcare Interpreters Association. Utilizes interpersonal skills to maximize customer service in a manner that supports excellence in customer service and safe patient care. Performs other duties as needed. Job Specifications: High school Diploma or GED required. College degree preferred. Proof of training in an accredited interpreter program required. Minimum two years experience as an interpreter in a healthcare setting using in-person, telephone, and video-remote interpretation required. Proficient in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, as well as basic knowledge of cultural folk medicine required. Strong customer service background required. Bi-lingual and bi-cultural in English and Spanish required. National Translation Accreditation Language Competency and/or California State Interpreter Certification required. Flexes schedules according to departmental/organizational needs and works holidays and weekends as requested. Fluent in speaking, reading, and writing in English and Spanish. Able to write legibly; speak in English and Spanish with professional quality; use computer, printer, and software programs necessary to the position; troubleshoot basic office equipment necessary to the position. Demonstrates competency in detail work and accuracy. Able to communicate and relate positively, effectively, and professionally with others; comprehend and follow-through with instructions; be professionally assertive; be consistent in following and/or enforcing policies; work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; accept direction. Able to communicate positively and effectively with physicians, healthcare providers, teammates, LEP patients and families; think critically; perform basic math functions; manage multiple assignments effectively; organize and prioritize workload; work well under pressure; problem solve; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail; work independently with minimal supervision. Able to see clearly to distinguish colors and shapes on the computer and hard copies of documents necessary to the position; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone, and identify and distinguish various sounds associated with workplace.
