Principal Duties and Responsibilities 1.Medical interpreting between clinician and patient during face-to-face or telephone encounters. 2.Acts as a liaison between patients and staff. 3.Informs clinicians about cultural considerations when treating Portuguese-speaking patients. 4.Interpreter for ancillary departments. 5.Interpreters between non-clinical staff and patients as needed. 6.Translates into Portuguese patient information materials, consent forms, etc. 7.Edits translated materials. 8.Identifies areas where hospital can better meet needs of Portuguese/Brazilian communities, i.e.., outreach, signage, etc. 9.Explains interpreter model to clinicians and patients. 10.Assists with training staff interpreters. 11.Orients patients to hospital as needed, i.e., L & D tours, community events, etc. 12.Other duties as needed. DEPT. SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS: 1.Assists in the coordination/scheduling of free-lance interpreters. 2.Assists with data entry/data collection . 3.Completes interpreter paperwork. 4.Assists as needed scheduling and confirming patient appointments 5.Supports patients outside of their clinical appointments as needed with issues relating to their care at the hospital. 6.Contributes towards developing an environment that is welcoming and responsive to Portuguese-speaking patients.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED 1.Bachelor of Arts or equivalent degree or experience. 2.Excellent rating on Interpreter Assessment Evaluation. 3.Bi-lingual (oral and written) bi-cultural skills. 4.Medical interpreting skills, including accuracy and memory. 5.Basic anatomy and physiology vocabulary in English and Portuguese. 6.Experience working as an interpreter in a clinical environment. 7. Ability to work well as a team with clinicians and patients. 8.Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
