The University of Illinois at Chicago is seeking a Group Fitness Coordinator for Campus Recreation who will provide leadership to the Group Fitness Program, consistent with the guidelines set forth by Campus Auxiliary Services, UIC Student Centers, and the University of Illinois at Chicago. Responsibilities include program administration, program assessment, training, daily planning, program policies and procedures, and supervision. UIC Campus Recreation is a part of UIC Student Centers reporting through Campus Auxiliary Services to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. The UIC Student Centers organization includes Programs and Activities, Campus Recreation, Student Center Operations, and the UIC Forum.
The Group Fitness Coordinator will be responsible for the management of more than 75 Group Fitness and Instruction activities per week including the recruitment, hiring, training and supervision of associated Graduate Assistant and hourly staff. The duties of the Group Fitness Coordinator include a combination of student and non-student hourly supervision. The Group Fitness Coordinator serves as an ambassador for the department and promotes the Fitness program to the UIC community.
Minimum Qualifications –
1. A Bachelor’s Degree in a field relevant to the position (e.g., Kinesiology, Physical Education, or closely related field)*
2. Two (2) years (24 months) of experience in the promotion, design, development, and administration of recreational programs*
3. Current Certification/Licensure, from a nationally recognized professional organization, requiring continuing education and/or ongoing documentation of proficiency in specialty area required of position such as certified pool operator, first aid instructor, lifeguard certification, CPR, AED, personal training, the Group Fitness Instructor Certification from the American Council on Exercise (ACE) or the Personal Trainer Certification from the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) or similar license/certification etc.)
Additional Desirable Qualifications
- Note: An advanced degree (Master’s or higher) in Kinesiology, Physical Education, Exercise Science, or closely related field may substitute in meeting the qualifications in number 1 and count for one year of experience in number 2 above.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated leadership and management skills, plus practical experience in recreational sports management and programming. The ideal candidate should also possess excellent interpersonal skills along with a sound concept of university recreation program administration and the student development process.
First Aid, CPR and AED certifications are required within six months of hire. In the performance of normal job responsibilities, the employee may become occupationally exposed to Bloodborne Pathogens. An annual certification is required of all staff regarding the safe handling and personal protection from BBP.
