Come be a part of one of the fastest growing day camp programs in Palo Alto! At the Oshman Family JCC J-Camp, our fun, energetic staff have a blast with campers entering grades K-6 and are broken into three different types of day camp: traditional, special focus, and sports. Our traditional camp programs are two week sessions that include swim lessons, art, sports, Jewish Values, field trips and overnights. Some field trips this summer include a San Francisco Giants Baseball Game, Great America, and the San Francisco Zoo. Our staff also enjoys staff appreciation events including awards and social outings! All of our camps are accredited by the American Camp Association.

General Function:

Under the direction of the Unit Leader, the Camp Counselor will interact with and supervise camper's ages 5-12 years old. Camp Counselors are assigned a small group of 6-10 campers to supervise during each session (depending on ratio constraints). In addition, the Camp Counselor assist with planning and implementing daily large, medium, and small group activities while assuring that day camp operates in a safe manner at all times.

Education and/or experience:
  • Minimum of 18 years of age
  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
  • Experience working with youth in a camp or other recreational setting

Certification Requirements:
  • CPR for Child and Adult & Basic First Aid or the ability to obtain upon employment (certification must be listed on the ACA approved certifications) see http://www.acacamps.org/accreditation/firstaidcpr to check your certifications
  • State of California Food Handler Card or the ability to obtain upon employment

  • Effectively present information and respond to questions from supervisors, co-workers, volunteers, members, donors and the general public

  • Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions

Principal Activities (Essential Duties and Responsibilities):
  • Effectively interact with and supervise a group of 6-10 campers entering grades K-6.
  • Maintain camper discipline and supervision at all times including knowledge of camper's whereabouts at all times
  • Actively facilitate camper development in Outdoor Living Skills, Outdoor Recreation Activities, Social Skill Development, Values, Multi-Cultural and Environmental Awareness.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and conduct with total staff team as a positive adult role model.
  • Assist in development, implementation, and evaluation of daily day camp activities.
  • Adhere to and enforce J-Camp policies and procedures ensuring that all day camp activities operate in a safe manner at all times.
  • Communicate to the extended care counselor staff any information that needs to be relayed to campers and their families who participate in the extended care program.
  • Maintain good public relations with day camp parents.
  • Attendance at staff meetings and pre-camp training.
  • Be prompt to all work assignments and adhere to day camp daily schedule and operating calendar.
  • Maintain all camp equipment and supplies
  • Care about and give attention to campers' needs.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Hours of Position:
  • Exempt, Seasonal Full Time Position
  • Mandatory general staff training: May 3-5, 2013 (attendance required)
  • In general the schedule will be as follows: 8:00am - 4:30pm, Monday - Friday, June 10 - August 2
  • Additional extended days and/or overnights may be required. Dates and schedules for extended work hours will be provided during staff training.
