Under general supervision, directs and controls landfill traffic; separates and screens waste; interacts and assists customers and the general public in waste disposal; performs general upkeep of landfill and operations; operates heavy equipment as assigned.

Spots and safely directs traffic at appropriate landfill disposal site;
Clears metal and large debris from working face and roadways to reduce customer exposure;
Performs waste screening for hazardous types of waste; and conducts general upkeep and maintenance of workstation;
Operates heavy equipment as needed/assigned;
Interacts with customers and answers general questions in relation to waste disposal;
Conducts general litter control and general upkeep of assigned area;
Separates and transports e-waste; shifts and adjusts waste and tarps bins; and accurately determines and conveys waste levels received with landfill personnel;
Maintains the up keep of the overall landfill appearance;
Performs litter control along common areas, roadways leading into and out of the landfill, and fence lines;
Supports the C & D ( Construction and Demolition Debris) recycling program;
Performs other general labor related to landfill operations;
Works weekends, as required;
Performs related duties, as required.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS: Drive and operate heavy equipment and less complex equipment; moderate lifting up to 100 pounds; manual dexterity, good vision and hearing, bending, stooping, walking, standing, reaching and climbing.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Work is performed in a standard public works facility and is generally performed in an outdoor environment. Regularly is exposed to large or working machinery, extreme weather conditions, potential physical harm, infectious disease, and hazardous chemicals when working outdoors in and around heavy equipment, vehicles and tools at a landfill environment.
KNOWLEDGE OF: Heavy equipment operation and maintenance procedures. Effective communication principles and practices .
SKILLS: Operating a motor vehicle. Working cooperatively with County employees, outside vendors, and the public. Communicating effectively verbally and in writing. Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public including meeting and dealing tactfully with the public. Interpreting policies and procedures sufficient to discuss and explain them.
ABILITY TO: O perate equipment and motor vehicles skillfully, safely and in accordance with manufacturers’ guidelines. Work independently within established procedural guidelines and to work in a team environment. Perform manual labor, sometimes under unfavorable weather conditions.

Graduation from high school or GED. Two (2) years experience in operation and maintenance of heavy equipment; OR, High school may be substituted by ten (10) years of experience with Santa Rosa County, or twelve (12) years verifiable experience in the operation of heavy equipment.
LICENSE: Applicant must have a v alid State of Florida Driver License at the date of hire with the ability to obtain a CDL class B license within 6 months of being hired and maintain said license while employed in this position.
CERTIFICATION: Landfill Operator Certification required within one year of employment.
