The Lifeguard, under general supervision, will safeguard the general public by performing lifeguard services over an assigned beach or swimming pool facility, and perform other related work as assigned.
The summer season starts May 24, 2013 and continues through September 2, 2013. The Cove operates between 5:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. Lifeguards will work rotating shifts on part-time work schedules up to 35 hours per week.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
• Safeguards the general public by performing lifeguard services for an assigned aquatic center area; makes rescues, administers first aid, and performs manual and mechanical resuscitation.
• Advises about and enforces regulations concerning swimming areas and aquatic center facilities.
• Makes periodic patrols of pool areas warning bathers of unsafe swimming conditions; posts appropriate warning flags and informational signs.
• Maintains lifeguard station and equipment in neat and orderly condition; as necessary, does other park maintenance work.
To qualify for this position, candidates must possess (or show proof of enrollment for) the following valid certificates of training that meet the statutory requirements for Lifeguard under California's Health and Safety Code:
Lifeguarding/First Aid Certificate [ Enroll in training now! ]
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for the Professional Rescuer or equivalent [ Enroll in training now! ]
Knowledge of: Lifesaving techniques, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), first aid, water safety, and use and care of lifesaving equipment.
Ability to: Perform swimming rescues in various water conditions and tread water for extended periods of time; respond in an effective and mature manner in emergency and stress situations; evaluate swimming conditions relative to public safety; deal tactfully and effectively with individuals and groups; sit and stand for long periods of time in adverse weather conditions, particularly heat and wind; establish and maintain effective working relationships, communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
