The mission of the Palo Alto Institute for Research and Education, Inc. (PAIRE) is to facilitate research and education activities conducted at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS). The range of research activities is broad and includes special emphasis on biomedical, health services, rehabilitation engineering, mental health and geriatric research endeavors. We also support various educational instruction or other learning experiences of benefit to employees and veterans.

PAIRE, a nonprofit foundation affiliated with the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS), is seeking a Life Sciences Research Associate I/Animal Physiologist. This person will be responsible for the PI's laboratory animal facility and assist lab members with animal surgeries.

This is a regular, full time, exempt position.

As a condition of employment, all PAIRE employees are required to have an approved (WOC) appointment with the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS) before they can commence work.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Set up breeding cages as necessary to produce experimental animals;
  • Perform, assist, and train with animal surgeries;
  • Monitor mice daily in the animal facility for the health and breeding status;
  • Perform micro-tattooing and tail biopsy for identification of the mice;
  • Perform PCR genotyping on transgenic and mutant mice generated for the projects;
  • Maintain records of breeding, weaning, and genotype results of the entire mouse colony;
  • Assist lab members in physiologic, molecular biology, genetic, and/or cell biology studies of the immune system;
  • Immunize mice using various techniques for monoclonal antibody generation;
  • Carry out and train with surgical procedures under anesthesia on mice including splenectomy;
  • Maintain close communication with PI and lab members regarding current and future planned animal projects;
  • Assist with ACORP Management.
  • EDUCATION: B.S. or B.A. degree in a health-related field or equivalent experience in Biology, Biochemistry, or Molecular is required;
  • YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: 1 year of experience in a research laboratory and previous experience working with animal disease models is required; 3+ years of mouse husbandry work-related experience desired;
  • Comfortable working with small animals;
  • Strong interest in research and immunology problems;
  • Knowledge of research protocols;
  • Knowledge of scientific research methodology;
  • Knowledge of research protocols;
  • Good interpersonal skills and communication with PI and other researchers in lab;
  • Proven skills in small animal handling and procedures;
  • Understanding of laboratory materials and equipment safety rules and regulations.
