Conducts standard and specialized chemical and bacteriological tests on water samples to monitor the City Waste Water (WW) systems, and assess compliance with state and Federal regulations and quality standards.

Examples of Duties:

Conducts standard and specialized chemical and bacteriological tests on WW samples; performs laboratory tests according to Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), USEPA and Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater. Conducts physical, chemical and bacteriological water quality analytical tests to determine presence of various compositions in water, wastewater and reclaimed water; Analyzes samples, interprets results and reports findings according to standardized procedures. Keeps records of instrument operation and sampling work performed; enters test results in computer database and logbooks. Maintains complete and accurate records for compliance with TCEQ requirements; informs supervisor of anomalous test results. Performs quality control analysis and lab proficiency tests to verify compliance with TCEQ standards; monitors WW regulations and procedures databases, and recommends revisions to City procedures. Calibrates and maintains laboratory equipment, tools and instruments; cleans and sterilizes work area, instruments, and equipment. Notifies supervisor when problems occur which are beyond the skills of the Technicians; and tracks the problem until it has been resolved. Maintains inventory stock, including equipment, supplies and chemicals. Assists with the training and cross-training of other City staff. Performs other related duties as assigned or required.

Minimum Requirements:

Associate's degree in Laboratory Sciences, Biology, Chemistry or related field, and two years Wastewater program experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License. Class B Wastewater Treatment license from Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) is required; additional technical skills training and certifications may be required depending on area of assignment.

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

Work is performed in a laboratory environment within waste water treatment facilities. The job requires the performance of moderate physical work, and lifts and carries up to 50 pounds. Full manual dexterity and visual acuity is required for laboratory work. The job risks exposure to bright/dim light, dusts and pollen, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels, fumes and/or noxious odors, traffic, moving machinery, electrical shock, heights, and toxic/caustic chemicals.
