This position is located in Serra Mesa.
8-hour shift: 8:00 am – 4:30 pm and 2:00 pm – 10:00 pm,, working every other weekend.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Current unencumbered California Registered Nurse licensure
- Completion of an approved lactation course of study that prepares applicant to take the IBCLC exam
- Current BLS and NRP certifications
- IBCLC within one to two years’ lactation hire date or maintenance of IBCLC
- Three or more years of counseling breastfeeding mothers preferably in the hospital setting on a post-partum unit or in the NICU
- Advanced computer skills
- Effective interpersonal skills as well as oral, written, and presentation skills

Provides consulting services to patient and family that progresses them towards self-identified and individualized breastfeeding goals. The consultant utilizes the nursing process in the approach to care of patients to promote quality breastfeeding/lactation outcomes.
Lactation services are provided primarily on an inpatient basis to a very busy 72 bed mother-baby unit (MIS) and a fast-paced 84 bed NICU. This position will practice primarily on the MIS unit and float occasionally to the NICU. In addition to a high functioning lactation team, SMBHWN has a New Beginnings Boutique, staffed by Certified Lactation Educators, to provide retail accessories, basic education and several support groups to promote a successful breastfeeding experience for expectant and new parents.
