Job Description Certica Solutions is seeking to expand its Austin-based software solutions team with the addition of a Lead Data Architect/Developer. You will be joining a fast-paced team developing SaaS web-based applications for the national K-12 school district market.

The ideal candidate is experienced in a broad set of database technologies, has strong analytical, problem solving, and communication skills with a keen attention to detail and, as part of a multi-disciplined development team, will be motivated to “jump in”, attack new challenges, and learn new skills independently. The Lead Data Architect/Developer will work closely with our product management, client services, and hosted operations teams to ensure that Certica’s applications are kept up to date with the latest education data standards and meet our service level objectives for performance and reliability. Two key responsibilities for the successful candidate will be:

  • Data architecture and ongoing development of Certica’s hosted K-12 compliance solution, Certify; and
  • Data architecture and implementation of the Ed-Fi solution from the Ed-Fi Alliance (a wholly owned subsidiary of the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation) to underpin the introduction of Certica’s forthcoming K-12 Performance Management software-as-a-service (SaaS) solution that will be offered to Certica’s existing customers as well as new prospects.

  • The Ed-Fi solution is an educational data standard and tool suite that empowers educators with real-time, actionable information on every student in their classroom, school, district or state and is licensed to educational technology companies such as Certica Solutions to accelerate deployment of standards-based educational technology solutions.     The Lead Data Architect/Developer position will report to the Chief Technology Officer, and be located in Austin, Texas.

    Essential Tasks and Responsibilities:
    • Data architect, capable of designing, defining and implementing data model and schema for operational data store and data warehouse.
    • Perform design, development and implementation of database solutions for education systems.
    • Ability to identify and put in place methodologies and best practices for product team members to improve database and ETL process development.
    • Highly skilled data analyst capable of understanding and designing complex data driven domain systems.
    • Works with engineering team in planning and scheduling projects.
    • Effectively writes functional specifications and detailed design documents.
    • Works closely with the quality assurance team in assessing testability of system components.
    • Diagnoses and troubleshoots application issues.
    • Participates in detailed design and code reviews with engineering team.

    • Senior ETL developer with 7+ years demonstrable experience using ETL tools with Microsoft SQL Server, SQL Server Integration Services 2008 and SQL Query Analyzer.
    • Strong in T-SQL, Stored Procedures and other database related artifacts. Strong SQL architecting experience.
    • 7+ years experience in full project life cycle development of commercial SQL Server database applications (SaaS preferred).
    • 7+ years experience with database design and data modeling.
    • Strong knowledge of and experience with Data Warehousing methodologies and architectures, including and not limited to: ETL design, staging, transformations, delta/change data capture, star-schemas, snowflakes, cubes, history loading, dimensional modeling and reporting tools.
    • 5+ of experience understanding and analyzing requirements and defining strategies and architecture plans for implementation.
    • Experience in performance tuning of database execution.
    • Strong .Net application knowledge is a plus.
    • Ability to adapt to dynamic environment with focus on team and delivering results.
    • Working familiarity with K-12 educational technology applications is highly desirable.
    • BS degree or higher in computer technology discipline is required.
    • Must independently keep abreast of state-of-the-art data management technologies and methodologies.
    • Team player with strong inter-personal, written and oral communication skills.
    • Self-motivated individual with strong initiative and sense of ownership.
    • Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
