The Lead Manufacturing Engineer will be technically accountable for the Integrity, Safety, Quality and Output (ISQO) of multiple processes and equipment in the production of nuclear ceramic fuel. In this role, you will be part of the technical team responsible for the Fuel Manufacturing operation in the nuclear business. The team converts UF6 to UO2 powder for use in manufacturing of nuclear fuel for commercial nuclear power plants.
The primary responsibility of the Lead Engineer will be the welding of zirconium tubes and fuel rods. In addition, you will:
Own and be accountable for several fuel production processes, primarily the welding (TIG and Resistance) of zirconium tubes
Be responsible for supporting planned and unplanned maintenance activities
Be responsible for understanding Items Relied On For Safety (IROFS) for equipment and able to execute Function Test Instructions (FTIs) to ensure operability
Maintain, review, update and create area operating procedures (OPs), temporary operating procedures (TOPs), job hazards analyses (JHA) and chemical job hazards analyses (CJHA)
Ensure compliance with all safety and quality regulations and metrics through use of compliance calendars, databases and tracking systems
Identify and implement proactive solutions for incremental and game changing process improvements related to safety, quality and output through use of Lean and Six Sigma tools
Support New Product Introduction (NPI) initiatives in the fuel production areas, including process development
Train hourly operators in sound techniques and proper operation of equipment to meet safety, quality and output targets
Bachelor’s Degree in an Engineering Discipline with a minimum of 2 years of experience with engineering automated welding systems (TIG and Resistance) (or a High School Diploma / GED with a minimum of 5 years of experience with engineering automated welding systems (TIG and Resistance)
Minimum of 3 years of experience in manufacturing or welding
Ability and willingness to wear a respirator in accordance with site requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Materials Science
Master’s Degree in Science or Engineering
Experience with welding zirconium and exotic alloys
Experience in nuclear fuel fabrication
Experience with programmable logic controllers (PLC), VAX systems, and most programming languages (HP Vee, VB, C++, etc.)
Experience with equipment installation and facilities modifications, including management of capital and expense projects
Experience with NRC Regulations, Process Safety Management (PSM), Process Hazards Analysis (PHA) or Integrated Safety Analysis (ISA)
Strong PC skills / aptitude; direct knowledge of FMO Fuel Business System software
Demonstrated high integrity in decisions, communications, actions and interpersonal relationships
Six Sigma Certified (GE Employees only)
